It is about a slave named Toms who throughout the novel keeps up his faith in Christ and does his best to help others. He befriends many people but the one person whom he will always remember is a little girl named Eva. He and Eva form a close relationship by Eva reading to Tom from his Bible, Eva herself grows to understand and love Christianity. Tom also shares his Christian faith with many other people and although beaten by his slave owner for sharing his faith he never gives up. Although he is unjustly and ignorantly vilified by contemporary Black society, Tom forgives his oppressors, turns the other cheek to blows, blesses those
He is a good Christian man who under the worst conditions always prays to God and finds a way to keep his faith. As the novel progresses, the cruel treatment that Tom suffers at the hands of many people progresses, but Tom withstands his doubt. Arthur Shelby is the owner of Uncle Tom in Kentucky, he sells Tom to the cruel Mr. Haley to pay off his debts. He’s educated, kind, and basically good-hearted man. Nonetheless he tolerates and perpetuates slavery. George Shelby loves Tom and promises to rescue him from the cruelty into which his father sold him. After Tom dies, he resolves to free all the slaves on the family farm in Kentucky. Augustine St. Clare is Tom’s master in New Orleans. St. Clare does not believe in God, and is a heavy alcoholic. He sees the evil of slavery but nonetheless tolerates and practices it. Eva is St. Clare’s daughter, and is presented as an absolutely perfect.
