Susan B. Anthony wants the best for america, it's her home, but america won't be a good union if not everyone isn't included in it, and has the same equal rights. For one thing, “It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we the whole people, who formed the union.” Anthony, 1. Everyone is a living human being with the same 10 characteristics of life! So why aren't women treated the same? The union wouldn't be what they are if everyone did not help form it or put in effort. What lead to this was the women and every race not being able to vote and women getting looked down upon on. To form a more perfect union they need to “...establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, …” Anthony, 1. This is saying that …show more content…
women need to stick up for themselves and take upon an advantage on the men.
“ It is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty…” Anthony, 1. She is explaining that it is not ok for men to treat women like a tree in the middle of the woods, women are still people and men are just another person on this world. Equally important, “ I
stand before you tonight under indictment for the alleged crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote.” Going back to her speech about women not being able to vote, she stands in front of millions of people, hundreds of cops and is telling it as a formal change for the “supposed” crime of having voted.
To give her speech more action and compelling she used things in the real world such as comparing. Foe example, “ For any state to make a sex qualification that must ever result in the disfranchisement of one entire half of the people is to pass a bill of attainder, or an ex post facto law and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land.” Anthony, 1. On the land they stand on is there for freedom, yet they are practically holding women girls hostage from ever being able to vote or be a real citizen. Also, for someone to compare gender should have supreme consequences or face time in community service or get denied like women, and therefore be a violation of the civil rights. This was brought up because they are denied the use of voting, and playing men sports, etc. To support this she used action verbs and figurative language. For attention grabbers and for people to keep people listening and/or reading she used words such as mockery and attainder, this made others question and listen on for a better understanding. She also used figurative language such as comparing a women to a bill of attainder or women as deprivement. Meanwhile, “ To them this government is not a democracy. It is not a republic...” Anthony, 1 and 2. Women are trying their hardest to stand out out and make a difference but the men keep pushing them down and women want to help build a stronger union but the white male citizens treat it wrong they don't think of the union or democracy to them the government has no powers only they do. Carrying on, “ It is an odious aristocracy; a hateful oligarchy of sex…” Ever since Susan B. Anthony has started a statement nothing has changed it is a revolting nobility like its not real. Finally, “ Which makes father, brother, husband, sons the rulers over mother, sisters, wife, and daughters of every household--which ordains all men sovereigns…” She is constantly reminding that right now currently in 1873 that men are way more powerful over women, which makes all white male citizens rulers.
“ The only question left to be settled now is; Are women persons?” Anthony, 2. Do women qualify to be a person, do they help or do anything. If men overrule women and men sovereigns, all women subjects and discord and rebellion into every home of the nation then what are women supposed to do. What led to this was the discussion of how men treat women like a animal because they think they are simply not a citizen. The author used dialogue to talk to everyone as a group. She also used used irony to express the meaning of complicated words by using language that would mean something else in an different perspective. She explains, “ Being persons, then, women are citizens; and no state has a right to make any law or to enforce any old law, that shall abridge their privileges or immunities.” Anthony, 2. So it's pretty self explanatory that in the civil war they fought for freedom rights and they no law of any kind can take it away. Furthermore, “in the constitutions and laws of the several states is null and void, precisely as in everyone against negro’s.” Anthony, 2. Finally, “Webster, Worcester, and Bouvier all define a citizen to be a person in the United States, entitled to vote and hold office.” Anthony, 2. To three scientist that she just listed the definition to be a citizen is to be a person in the United states and once you are a citizen of any race or any gender then they can run for office, they can vote!
So once again Susan B. ANthony wanted women to be able to vote and be able to be considered a citizen. She wanted to get her point across by breaking the law and voting, this seemed to get more women on her side and take charge. Today, women are allowed to vote so is any race. In fact, there's a women running for president. Today, we look at each other as equal people. At school, we have the athletic group, smart (nerdy) group, the “weird” people, the skinny twigs, and the larger people. Instead, of judging people by their gender, today, we worry about judging by looks.
