Summary
In “The story of an Hour,” Mrs. Mallard has a heart condition so, when news about her husband’s death is received. Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine, sits down with her to relay the message as easy as possible without getting he worked up. Mrs. Mallard’s husband’s friends Richards originally found out because he was in the newspaper corridors. When a report of a train accident killed Brantley Mallard. After finding out about her husband’s death: Mrs. Mallard went to her room and cried passionately. Because of the news about her husband; Mrs. Mallard is over joyed. She feels free and fantasizes about the life ahead. Finally she goes down stairs with her sister and the front door opens. Brantley Mallard walks in and he’s not dead. Mrs. Mallard receives the shock her sister tried to prevent. Later, the coroners examined her; they say she was so full of happiness that it murdered her.
Reaction.
Marriage is sometimes a hard struggle, in “The Story of an Hour,” Mrs. Mallard has to deal with her husband’s death. She seems melancholy at first but when she goes to her room she feels free. It must be hard losing a loved one but Mrs. Mallard doesn’t seem upset. Marriage is a life time commitment and with her husband dying she feels over joyed. It isn’t right to be excited about your husband’s death. She should have been upset and mourning. It’s understandable to be relieved if he was struggling through a painful sickness, but he wasn’t in any pain. Women are the ones who usually have a harder time with death and the mourning period: in this case it seemed there was no mourning.

The author was not very specific about her troubled heart, which seemed to be a symbol of not just physical, but emotional distress as well. Jaqueline (Ms.Mallards sister) took precaution before announcing her husbands death to her because of that issue. When Jaqueline finally stated that her husband had supposedly died, she weeped momentarily but her grief was gone once she realized a new sense of life that was to be experienced. To understand the significance of these elements, one must understand what this story is about. The Story of an Hour is directly about how a woman finds out, and reacts, to news of her husband’s passing. But that is just the plot. The theme of the story goes far beyond that. Theme “is a representation of the idea behind the story (Clugston.)” When looking at Chopin’s story, a distinct theme is seen. This is the fear of being happy beyond marriage.
