changes. Cultural became a big part of this time. The united states went through many difficulties attempting to return to normalcy. Even though president Harding was harshly been judged by his history He did succeed in the attempt to return America back to normal again. One major problem the united states after world war one was the Red Scare. After WW1 the United States put up the”iron curtain” that separated Russia and the United States(wikipedia/iron.curtain).
This idea was to stop communism from getting into the United States. The Communist Revolution in the USSR caused mass hysteria, known as the “red scare” in America resulting in numerous American being labeled as communist or anarchist and persecuted as being un-American(American-history.org). During the red scare there was a blacklist that was created and once you were put on it it was very difficult to find a job(biography.com). Freedom of speech was limited because no could speak favorably of communism without being put on the list. The red scare referred to a fear of communism in the United States during the 1920’s. The Red Scare was caused after the Bolshevik revolution which led many to fear Russian immigrants(American-history.org). The government blamed all types of alcohol. Basically people blamed communist for everything. The Soviets went through an economic reform. The Red Scare actually occurred 2 times first in 1919-1921 then again from 1947-1957(thehistoryconnection). The Red Scare scapegoated
communist. An enormous change swept through the United States in the 19th century, altering the lives of women at all levels of society(encyclopedia/women-rights). Women's suffrage made a change in the society. During the 18th century the role of a woman was extremely difficult and exhausting(angelfire/HistoryGals). Mostly women required to serve in the household they had to cook, clean , make clothing take care of the sick, grow gardens and much more. Women were often considered the property of men they were required to get married at a young age, and of course they were not allowed to vote(angelfire/HistoryGals).Women believed that obtaining the right to vote would ensure that prohibition laws would be passed. They also wanted a reform of property laws , equal guardianship of children, new divorce laws, improve working conditions, higher wages, and access to higher education(historynet.com). Two brave women organized a convention to gain women's right to vote. The first women's right convention occurred in Seneca falls New York in 1848(khanacademy.org). Women around the world wanted political equality between men and women. Women were starting to take up more active roles in the war. They got jobs in factories to support the war. They lived during a time period where women could not vote. The national woman suffrage American association in 1890 elected Elizabeth Cady Stanton for first president then Susan B Anthony was later elected for 2nd president. The women protested to get women's right to vote. Organizations held protests, riots, and opportunities where women could speak out politicians and other women. August 26 1920 the nineteenth amendment of the constitution giving woman's right to vote was signed by congress. Writers, artists, musicians, and poets reacted artistically against the prejudice they faced while expressing the hopes of the black community. The Harlem Renaissance is also known as the New Negro movement refers to the African american culture and intellectual life during 1920s and 1930s (humanitiestexas). It was a time when African Americans thrived and were able to show their culture through their art. Some of the nation's greatest thinkers and performers came out of this movement. One of the most famous writers during this time was W.E.B Du Boius also known as a civil right activist. He co-founded an organization named the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)(Anirudh). Also Louis armstrong, a popular musician was one of the great performers of this movement. The Harlem renaissance is known for African American music. Louis played the trumpet and also was a bandleader. He was most known for his songs “ Star Dust” and “What a Wonderful World”(louis). Armstrong work is recognized to this day and will always be for many years to come. The borrowing of funds to purchase overvalued stocks and disregard of warning signs led to the worst economic and social episode in the country's history. More than 160,000,000 shares on the New York Stock Exchange in one day. Stock prices started going down on October 9 the fall began and panic set in. On October 29, 1929 the stock market in New York City crashed, leading to the great depression. On Black tuesday the Dow industrial fell by -12 percent. Black Tuesday was a huge economic problem during the 1920s which had an impact on our societies(Black tuesday). Billions of people lost money and investors struggled to keep businesses afloat. “The stock market crash of 1929 was not the sole cause of the Great Depression, but it did act to accelerate the global economic collapse of which it was also a symptom” (Stock market crashes). Prices continued to drop as the united states went into the great depression. The great depression was a time of low economic disparities. Occurring mainly in North America, Europe and other industrialized areas during the 1920-1940s. The population of poor people increased extremely. Farmers couldn't afford to harvest their crops which forced them to let them rot. The United States went through political, social cultural and economic Changes to attempt to return to normalcy. Some of theses changes include the Red Scare, The women's rights movement,Black tuesday, and The Harlem Renaissance. In order to achieve a better society America had to go through these changes in order to be a better and safer country for the American people. As W.E.B Dubois said “Believe in life! Always human beings will live and progress to greater, broader, and fuller life” (W.E.B Dubois).
