ESSAY-WRITING REVIEW
AUTHOR
The first time you refer to the author you should use his or her first and last name. Following the first reference, you should use his or her last name only. Never refer to an author by their first name only. This implies a certain personal relationship to the author and is inappropriate in essay writing.
WRITE IN THE HISTORICAL PRESENT
Remember to write your essay using the historical present. This is the tense to use when talking about past events, and the tense to use when analyzing literature.
❖ Incorrect:
Ballard used setting to convey the psychological repercussions of overpopulation.
❖ Revised:
Ballard uses setting to convey the psychological repercussions of overpopulation. …show more content…
• The fact that no one is willing to stop taking anti-gerasone is what is significant. By speculating about what might happen or what a solution to their problems could be veers the essay away from the analytical focus.
Avoid mechanical phrases and using the personal pronoun “I”
Oftentimes, you can simply cross out the mechanical portion
For example:
In this essay I will discuss how in “The Concentration City” Ballard emphasizes the devolution of knowledge through a dystopic and overpopulated cityscape. First I will talk about the characterization of Franz, then the setting of the city, and finally I will analyze the symbolic nature of the train.
Avoid generalizing and/or moralizing
For example:
We do this in today’s society. We depend too much on technology and the consequences are much like that explored in the novel.
• This removes the focus from the text and should be avoided. Try providing a commentary about what the author suggests rather than making the issues personal.
