California voted on November 8 to approve the preposition 187, “Save our state” Initiative. There are five major provisions. First, Illegal aliens are not aloud into the public school system, and requires the educational institutions to verify the legal states of student and parent. Second, all providers of non – emergency health care services must verify the status of people seeking services in order to be reimbursed. Third, cash assistance must be verified by legal status before receiving assistance. Fourth, all providers…
Through his essay, "Immigration’s Aftermath" Alejandro Portes portrays the long term effect of the ongoing events of the immigrants getting into America and taking the lob paying jobs.…
“The Immigration Debate We Need” was written by George Borjas, a professor at Harvard, reporter, and economist of The New York Times. Borjas claimed that Trump’s immigration policy is more beneficial than what people make it to be. In the article, he said, “I am [the] living proof that immigration policy can benefit some people.” that supports the idea that the policy is not bad, but useful in society. In the article, he targeted people who are against the immigration policy because he wanted to spread the awareness that Trump’s policy is beneficial. While I was reading this article, I was starting to agree with his viewpoint because he said, “The climate suggests that many Americans view that number as too high”, that means the policy can…
America is known as a “melting pot” culture, which is a heterogeneous developed society (world dig). How could someone know if a certain person does not belong in America if we are all from different cultures? In 1939 and 1954 America showed its racisms by removing three million undocumented Mexicans. It was called the “operation wetback”(academic). It is okay to try and get rid of an issue we are having but no one should be called a term that discriminates their race. Its crazy how history repeats itself and now we have a state trying to start a movement by basically encouraging legal racial profiling. I understand punishing people who do not have legal documentation or green card, but why punish the people who travel with them to even go to the store, church, etc.? The bible mentions, “love your neighbor” but Arizona makes it hard to love your neighbor because a person is not going to love his Hispanic neighbor. They will not want to risk getting in trouble with the law. Many other little problems continue to rise due to the SB…
It was a pleasure to attend the lecture titled “The Economic Contribution of Immigration in America” by Dr. Alfonso Morales. As a Latina I am always happy to attend a lecture that is a part of the Latino Heritage Lecture Series. I strongly believe it is important to learn about different cultures, and these lectures are always very informative. For this lecture, I was especially excited to hear Dr. Morales discuss not only the economic contributions of immigration but also the more culturally inclined aspects of immigration. I found that even though his lecture was titled the “economic contributions of immigration”, he strongly emphasized more life enriching aspects like diversity and culture.…
There are 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States today. This number has risen by 3 million in only 10 years. Illegal immigration has been a problem in the United States dating back to the early 1980s. In the 1980s and still until today, the United States has seen a massive increase of illegal immigrants entering the United States. While most of these immigrants were from Latin America and Mexico, they were also from other parts of the world. Many illegal immigrants were crossing the unguarded border between the United States and Mexico. Border security has increased over they years, yet the rise of illegal immigrants coming into the United States is also increasing. Illegal immigration has become a very controversial topic…
Immigration has always been an important topic, especially in the recent political debates. The U.S has always been in favor of certain countries and applicant with talent, or money. There are many positive and negative impacts that come from favoring certain applicants. However, favoring the most talented was interesting on how it has a positive impact on the U.S and a negative impact on other developing counties.…
The period mentioned in the video was known as the Age of Mass Migration and known as one of the largest immigration periods. Millions of immigrants arrived in the United States during this time and became legal upon entry unlike today. Other than farming, the job market has not really changed much for immigrants. Unless they are legal or have a good skillset, if you are illegal today you must be content with whatever job you can find which usually doesn’t pay the best or is hard to find. Certain immigrants today are starting to face the same type of hatred and nativism that their ancestors did. Certain Muslim related countries have been barred entry and POTUS wants to build a wall to keep people from immigrating through Mexico.…
The controversy over immigration policy has become one of the most pressing issues in the United States. There are many misconceptions when it comes to immigration but the United States actually benefits from immigration by allowing foreigners to live study and work here. There are immigrants who have earned their citizenship in this in this country and are making the best of it and then there are those who come to this country just to cause harm. We as a people need to understand the difference between the two and to realize that there are some benefits to immigration.…
Immigration has been a ongoing controversy topic in the United States since the early 1800s. Immigration laws have been debated, changed, vetoed, and looked over. Nearly two centuries later our country is still overlooking the essential reasoning for immigration, which is to help migrants, not benefit from them. While reading the U.S Immigration policy passage I was able to identify both arguments. Most people who opposed wanted laws against migration simply because they weren't willing to accept something different in their unsettled country. Others only wanted to use newcomers for labor, and to push their company further. Never once did I read about anyone actually wanting to help immigrants. Every rule that has been previously put into place…
Immigration in the United States has been present for a long time. Millions of people leave their homelands weather it’s to have more freedom, better economic opportunity, or escape violence. Most people have the same goal, and that is to have a better and happier life in the United States. However, due to the broken immigration system in the United States many of those people have to live and work in the shadows because of their legal status. Our immigration system needs a radical renovation that would promote accountability and fairness for all.…
One who enters the country to take up a permanent residence without legal authorization is referred to as an illegal immigrant. An illegal immigrant fails to recognize the legal procedures that are necessary to occupy the country they plan to enter. In some cases, immigrants that are permitted to enter a country are given clearance to reside in that country for an allotted window of time. This is referred to as a “visa”. An issue sometimes occurring with those who hold visas, is when that immigrant remains in the country long after the visa has expired. At that point residing in the country as an illegal immigrant. An important perspective within the debate over illegal immigrants is the influence they have on that countries economy. In the United States, it is argued that illegal immigrants take jobs from…
People want to blame immigration for the economical crisis. Also, people think that immigrants take job opportunities away from U.S- born citizens. Forbes newspaper contributor, E.D Kain asserts “Yet in Alabama, the draconian new anti-immigrant law HB56 is promising not only to destroy people's lives and tear families apart, it's also threatening the state's already brittle economy at the worst possible moment....” Passing anti-immigration laws will not help the economy. Immigration does not destroy the economy. However, if an anti-immigration law is passed, the economy will most likely decline. Many individuals look at all immigrants as if they do not contribute into improving the economy. Legal immigrants…
Arizona immigration law – SB 1070 has become a controversial topic in the USA. This is a racist law which is encourages racial profiling. This is difficult to find out who is a legal or an illegal immigrant. So, this law requires police officers to determine the immigration status of a particular group, Hispanic who they reasonably suspect to be illegal immigrants. In addition, this bill gives power to officers to stop and ask questions to an individual without a warrant if there is a probable cause to believe the individual has committed a public offense. In “Arizona Immigration Law Will Lead to Racial Profiling,” Douglas Jensen writes that “there is no doubt that Mexicans-whether here illegally or not – will be affected by this bill.” Jensen also insists that by just looking a person it’s not possible to tell who is legal or an illegal resident. Because of this new law, brown skin people who look like day labors (Hispanics) can be stopped anywhere and asked for legal document by law enforcement. This is racial profiling.( this is not only racial profiling but also this law makes them feel nervous and harassment to be arrested to go somewhere without documents. Jensen also mentioned his article that “Governor Jan Brewer signed the law but says she doesn’t know what an illegal immigrant looks like.” Therefore, this law also limits freedom which is important point for people who lives in the United States, where discrimination should not be accepted in any form.…
