I was born in the Northeastern region, in the Mohawk Tribe.
Mohawk means “The People of the Flint”, or in Aloquinan, “Cannibal”. We used to live in an area that is now New York, and we took up most of the territory even though other tribes also lived there. Now we live in a Mohawk Indian reservation in Franklin County, New York, United States. We have a population of about 8,000 people right now. We are allowed to cross the border between The United States and Canada without being stopped.
Before America was colonized, we lived in homes called longhouses. These longhouses were very long and could fit up to 10 families. They were made out of birch and elm tree wood which is abundant in the area. We made many tools out of the abundant wood. To travel, we made canoes and sleds. In the winter we would tie dogs to the sleds and let them pull us around. We also used the canoes to travel over the
rivers.
Women in my tribe are very respected. They are called the “clan leaders”, and they make all the decisions concerning land and resources. The men make all the military decisions. Our clothing was quite simple, with men wearing a breechcloth and women wearing a wrap-around skirt. The word “Mohawk” was derived from our clan. Our heads were completely shaved except for a “mohawk” that was decorated with feathers. Hello, My name is Manitou. My parents named me after the great god, the ruler and master of life. Our original tribe name is the “Salish”, or in our language, “The People”. We know currently live on a reservation called ‘The Flathead Indian Reservation’, there, our 5,000 people from our tribe living on or near the reservation. The land area is currently at 1.2 million acres. Our reservation is also home to the “Confederated Salish” and “Kootenai Tribes”
I was born in ‘The Great Plateau’ region. The tribe I am part of is called: “The Flathead Tribe”. We are greatly mistaken by a lot of westerners about thinking our heads are ‘flat heads’, the reason they call us ‘Flat Heads’ is because our neighboring Native American tribes flatten the foreheads of their babies with cradleboards. Though our tribe has never engaged in this practice. We are the only tribe of ‘The Great Plateau’ region to not engage in this practice. Our tribe lived in the Rocky Mountain Region, or which is now called ‘Western Montana’. But if you would like the exact location of hour reservation, here is the address:

Near our tribe is a river, called the ‘North Fork’, currently now known as the ‘Flathead River’. Also a lake called the ‘Flathead Lake’. There are also ‘The Plains’ where we hunt Bison (Buffalo), it provides us a lot of useful utilities which I will explain later in the following paragraph.
Our geographical location influenced our nation (tribe) greatly. Firstly, because of the river, it provided us a fresh consistent source on fish. Also, it provided us easy access to a fresh water source. The plains impacted us greatly, we used Bison for many uses: Their meat provided us food, the hides are used for clothing and shelter and the bones are used for weapons and tools. Our tribe was greatly known for to use everything and never waist anything. It was true, since we couldn’t rely on much natural recourses to provide us clothing, shelter etc. We had to use every single bit of the Bison we captured. For example, we boiled the hoofs and used it as glue! Or we used the stomach and bladders as containers! We never waisted anything, and used everything rewardingly.
