Summary: The Offspring
Alternative Rock has a certain vocal style that makes the genre different from the rest of the branches of Rock and Roll. The Offspring is a band that predominantly thrived in this genre in the late nineties. The band has had serval different members, but the current members of The Offspring include: Greg Krisel on the bass guitar, Pete Parada on the drums, Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman on the lead guitar, and Dexter Holland on the vocals. The bands released their songs on behalf of Columbia Records. The Offspring a band that holds special attributes of the Alternative Rock genre but they also have differing features of their own. This song branches from the album “Americana”. This song predominantly illustrates the use of guitar and drums. In the beginning of the song the lyrics state “every kid on the whole damn street was gonna make it big and not be beat” (The Offspring). However, since the kids have grown up their lives have changed for the worst. Then, to tell the story in more depth, the band goes to explain exactly what every kid did to turn their life around for the worst. For example, the lyrics state “Mark still lives at home cause he’s got no job; he just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot”. (The Offspring). This is a classic example of how The Offspring tell a story. The topic of this particular song, however, is life as well as bad choices. Although, the main message portrayed in this song is: things are not how they are always expected. Musically, the bands normal heavy use of the drums shines predominantly. The use of fast speech also gets the story across. I feel this song tells such a true story that reflects the true agony of life. This song does a great job illustrating how life is comparable to a game of dice, but the players can bring their own dice and these dice can be stacked for them or against them.
