Newark also known as “The Brick City” is a city that is located in New Jersey. It is one of the five largest cities in New Jersey. Newark is a racially diverse city that is divided into the central, north, west, south and east ward. The Central, North and South are based on housing and business areas while the East ward is the downtown area that includes all the action with tourists like restaurants and shopping centers. Then there is the West ward, an area with homes with very high rates of crime.
In the first chapter of the novel “The Pact” we learn about George Jenkins and his lifestyle as a kid. At an early age he without really intending too found an interest in dentistry at one of his appointments through curiosity. He grew up in the Stella Wright Housing
divorced when George was a toddler and after that he saw his dad a couple times here and there but never really formed a relationship with him. Ella was a strong independent woman who was hardworking and did what she needed to for her family, although she struggled she never put that pressure on her kids. Four years later she married Heyward Mack. Even though he was George’s stepdad they never had an emotional connection or anything really he just did for him what he needed to and not much more. After being married to Ella for six years George and his brother Garland came home one day to find out that He yward had packed up and left them. George never really knew what it was like to have a father and son connection because he had no real connection with his own father or his stepdad. It wasn't until he met his friends dad that he felt that. His friend Shahid Jr. who he became close friends with introduced him to his father Shahid Jackson and he really made an impact on George.
