Summary: The Problem Of Unemployment Among Veterans

Often times, these various mental conditions prevent veterans from getting jobs and that unemployment prevents veterans from seeking help. Employers prefer not to take the risk of hiring a person that could snap at any moment. As a result, many veterans with mental conditions do not have jobs. The few veterans who are able to obtain employment are very cautious about everything they do to make sure they don't loose that job. Gary Richard commented that one reason unemployment is such a problem is that veterans are “scared to death of asking for help because they are afraid they will lose their job, or that it will get back to their employer” (“Students”). Not only is it hard to find jobs, but for those who finally do, it hard to keep
them.
As a result, many veterans don’t seek the help they need just so they can keep their jobs. In an attempt to combat the high unemployment rates among veterans, the government has created programs that help find jobs for the retired soldiers. Since the creation of these programs, “More federal agencies, corporations and nonprofit organizations joined the hiring effort and sought veterans for employment” (“Veteran Unemployment”). However, these job opportunities created for veterans are not always the best. There may be many jobs being created, ‘but too many of those are dead-end jobs” (Despite). In fact, many of the positions offered are minimum wage jobs. While America may be getting better, unemployment and underemployment is still a serious problem faced by veterans, especially those who face various mental
conditions as well.
