The Orangespotted Sunfish (Lepomis humilis) is often confused with other sunfishes. This species is classified in the class Actinopterygii, order Perciformes, and family Centrarchidae. One characteristic that makes them stand out from other fishes are their black and orange spots. Also, their operculum is lined with a solid white band. Nine to ten bars can be identified on this fish. The bars on the female have a light center, which is a way of gender identification when the males are outside of the breeding season and not brightly colored. Identification of species and gender is especially important when sampling fishes. During breeding season, males have a bright orange belly and metallic blue body while the females are much duller in color. The males are…
In his article David Foster Wallace proposes that the world’s largest lobster-eating celebration may actually be a massive animal-abusing process comparable to the cruelty to that of the Aztec’s human-sacrificing ritual. Wallace introduces Maine’s annual Marine Lobster Festival (MLF) held in late June attracts thousands of tourists seeking to devour the “steak meat” of the Atlantic Ocean – lobster. A lobster is a crustacean, existing in the region since colonial times with such abundance that early settlers condemned lobster meat as low-class. Presently, lobsters are considered a luxurious dish, which is a misconception Wallace thinks the MLF is trying to change. The chaotic dining area and meaninglessly-long lines attract few locals, but Wallace…
Critique I liked this book because it was interesting and you don’t know what will happen next. This book leaves you hanging. I like books with drama and this book has a lot of it. I also like how it was in third person point of view, so it switched between different people.…
I liked this book mainly because of how different it was compared to my lifestyle and how entertaining it was. Nikki turner didn’t really sugar coat much so I felt I was watching a movie and saw it for what it truly was. Like anyone’s guilty pleasure we all like reality television and it kind of reminded me of just that with fights and drama. The books good points that were how certain events that happen in one’s life good or bad really do shape a person into who they become. Teaching me to not be ashamed of what happens and to only use that circumstance as a motivation of some kind. For anyone that is interested in a gritty, suspenseful, and eye bulging book that keeps you wondering what’s next I would definably recommend this book to that someone willing to take a…
All in all, I think you made a great job with this book and I’ll maybe read the sequel if I get time, I really appreciate your work and I hope you continue writing books of this format.…
The deepest depths of the ocean, where life is hard and full of predators, lies the ugly ninja of the sea, the monkfish! The monkfish, a deep sea ninja, is also in grave danger. This is because monkfish are actually endangered due to over fishing.…
What I learned. I learned the differences between transgender, transexual, and transvestite (cross-dressing). Jennifer Boylan made it understood that she is a “male-to-female transexual” and not a transvestite. She said that the word transvestite sounds “creepy” and bug-like. She believes that it is not about dressing up like a female but mentally and physically feeling like one.…
In 1983, a male killer whale was captured in the North Atlantic, at the age of 2, he was already 11.5 feet long. They named him Tilikum. Tilikum was first introduced at Sealand, at night they stored the whales in a “module”, a dark, metal 20 x 30 feet box for two-thirds of their lives. During the winter the orcas would be locked in from 5 pm to 7 am. February, 1991, Kelty Burn falls into the water, then Tilikum brings her down, and drowns her. In the newspapers it claimed that it was an accidental drowning. Sealand closed, and SeaWorld needed a breeder. So, SeaWorld purchased Tilikum. Blackfish is a documentary that follows story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken lives of several people, and presents major issues within the sea-park industry.…
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and always kept me intrigued until the end. It had small twists in it that were rather easy to interpret but it was also very interesting. I don’t particularly relate to this book, although situations that I’ve endured have changed my perspective on life, in a positive aspect, and made me unprejudiced and versatile and not so…
I like how its really intense and calming and also some parts funny. I like how it talks about teen pregnancy because some young teens will want to get pregnant at such a young age and if they read this book it may help them change their mind and wait till they get older, thats very important to me. I really like the chapter where Bobby was talking about the wall when he was trying to get everything back in place and try to see who he really was, i thought that part was really good. I like how it goes back and fourth for the chapters like then and now, it makes you want to read more because in one chapter it tells you really good information and you just want to read even more till the…
American fiction writer, Danielle Evans, composes her short stories in such a way that the reader feels compelled to judge a character’s actions. Evans perfects the art of influencing a reader to relate to or feel strong emotion throughout a story. She centralizes the majority of her short stories on the concept of character isolation and the internal conflict caused by such isolation. This isolation stems from the rootlessness found in Evans’ characters. Her characters struggle to find a home, whether it be paternally, romantically, or internally, but they never quite make it there. The best example of this can be found in Evans’ short story “Jellyfish.” The two main characters, William and Eva, struggle with a multitude of internal issues.…
Did you know that almost eighty percent of the fish living on a reef could be killed by a single fish that is only about the size of a human hand? This fish happens to be called the lionfish and is mostly known for its beautiful features and deadly poison. Lionfish are indigenous to the Pacific Ocean; however, they have recently invaded the Atlantic Ocean and are growing in population at an uncontrollable rate. Marine biologists and even everyday snorkelers fear the dangers of these fish and have even started taking the matters of getting rid of them into their own hands. On the other hand doctors, chefs, and even snorkelers consider lionfish to be very useful and entertaining. According to marine biologists, the…
My book is called The Goodbye Summer written by Patricia Gaffney. It is a realistic fiction novel. My book is about a woman in her early thirties who has been raised by her grandmother. Her name is Caddie. She is very quiet and keeps to herself. She is like that with everyone but her grandmother. She is open with her grandmother about everything. Caddie gives music lessons for her income. She loves music. She also likes reading magazines. Her grandmother had recently broke her leg and wants to move out so Caddie can explore the world, get out there. Her grandmother moved into a nursing home not to far away from Caddie. That's mostly all I know right now, I just started this book not to long ago. I really like it so far. In Caddie's trash I…
Who does not love to see dolphins and whales flipping and doing tricks? Although the animals look happy and unharmed, there is a dark truth behind the captive marine life in amusement parks and zoos. Yes, attending zoos and marine life amusement parks are a part of childhood; but recently researchers have discovered just how cruel the environment is for the marine life in captivity. After studies of comparing the quality of life of marine animals in the wild and in captivity, there are multiple examples shown in Blackfish, PETA, and the Animal Welfare Institute that show that animals prosper and live longer in their natural habitats. Due to the cruelty endured by the captivated Orcas, all the SeaWorld parks should be shut down and the Orca whales should be set free to prevent further demise to their species.…
Bullying is a huge problem in schools, communities, and homes. Bullying doesn't just happen at a certain age, but it happens at any age. Bullying happens all over the world and is a huge problem that's happening around the world. After The Vietnam War the Australians hated the Vietnamese. " It took 521 Australian lives and left many soldiers with permanent disabilities" (the Vietnam war). The Australians lost the most people ever in this war. After that war any Vietnamese person would have gotten bullied. bullying causes suicide. Because it makes you feel bad about yourself. It makes you feel like you are incapable and/or undeserving of being loved and standing up for yourself. When a bully does something to embarrass you everyone sees it and that makes you feel like a failure. It makes you feel inadequate. It doesn't cause just depression. It makes you hate yourself and others and maybe even the world for tolerating such behavior.…
