The Discovery of the RMS Titanic Discovering the Titanic started with two research centers, Woods Hole Institution and the French National Institute of Oceanography, working together to find the ship. There were two phases in finding the Titanic. Newly developed underwater imaging were used to find the ship. But first before anything could go underway the two team leaders Dr. Robert D. Ballard and Jean Louis Michel, have to research the history of the Titanic. They also needed to have knowledge about previous attempts to find the Titanic. After all their research they narrowed the search area to 100 square miles. The first phase of searching started on July 1, 1985 conducted by the French team. They searched the area using a sonar system, and using the technique known as “mowing the lawn”. The thirty-one day trip aboard the research ship “Le Suroit” was tough. The French gad to encounter rough weather. Although they faced many difficulties the team had eliminated more than 75 percent of the search area. Now it was time for the second phase which was led by the American with some French members to find the Titanic. On August 22 aboard the R/V Knorr the team started where the French team left off. With the pressure of just having twelve days to find the Titanic, the team used the strategy of scanning the search area instead of searching for the Titanic’s massive hull. The used the newly developed sonar, “ANGUS”, and video camera system, “Argo”. On September 1, 1985 the Titanic’s boiler was discovered under 12,400 feet of water. When the crew came back to the U.S thousands of people and media filled the dock to welcome them back home and to celebrate the discovery of the long lost ship.
