Ultimately, our health is in our hands. If you are high up in your company or in a position to lobby those who are, start making health, wellness, and well-being transmutations in your workplace. If not, start by taking responsibility for your wellness. Many organizations practice yoga together at least weekly and has a flexible workday. “Our motto is simple: Be Well, Do Well, and Live Well— for yourself and others” (MacLeod, 2011). This literature review reflects that health, fitness, and well-being programs benefit those with an illness such as diabetes. Physical activity is recommended for people with Type Two Diabetes. According to Employee Wellness USA, only 25% of employers offered health management programs in 1996. This is mind blowing considering statistics now show that for every dollar spent on wellness, there is a savings of $2.30 to $10.10. The incipient Patient Aegis and Affordable Care Act, as a component of health care reform, fixates on aversion and wellness instead of diagnosis and treatment" (Admin, 1996, npn). Employers must establish and find ways to manage or control health care costs by educating employees about their responsibility in managing their health through the fitness and well-being programs when they are offered. Organizations that offer fitness and well-being programs have been prosperous in reducing their health care costs, especially when incorporating health, wellness, and well-being lifestyle incentives. Employers are recognizing the significance of developing environments that promote positive health while engaging employees in the process. Diabetes Mellitus "is a disease that takes place because of the body’s inability to process blood sugar (glucose). Blood sugar is controlled by insulin, a hormone that aids the movement glucose from the blood to muscles and other tissues. Diabetes happens when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body lack of respond to insulin that is made (Staff, 2008). Diabetes is a common disease; obesity and diet play an essential role in developing diabetes, as well as some other unhealthy habits such as drinking high alcohol. Dieting, quitting alcohol, and exercise can be preventive measures to prevent diabetes onset.
