Our text book is a vision of hope for the people going through the news of an apocalypse. In the first section of our textbook, “The World Before” examples of pop culture is used frequently. One piece that stands out is the profile: “A Plot Twist for Demi”. This is a piece that demonstrates how through all the hardships come good things. The reason is, in the profile, Demi has developed an internal struggle with herself and struggles to accept that she has a problem. However, in the end she realizes she needs help and that help has been there all this time. To relate this to our textbook, there is an apocalypse and people are struggling to figure out why it is happening, but don’t know what they can do about it. This story of a girl can help open the minds of these people and help them realize that to survive this apocalypse everyone has to work together. The imagery in this piece of Demi binge eating could represent that in the real world, no matter how hard you try to tell yourself that you can deal with a problem on your own you still have a problem. You need to find other people to help you. The hallucinations that Demi has of her body can be similar to during a terrible event and you end up losing yourself because you can’t handle yourself. You need the help of others to bring you back into reality. The people who read this piece can learn the meaning of connecting together as a community rather then a one man army. It brings in the vision of hope, and tears down the images of destruction and hopelessness because you know you aren’t alone.

In the second chapter of section one, the pieces describe the old ways of living and how life is before the apocalypse. In the future, if the textbook survives, the people that find the textbook will be able to see how life was before and it is used as a historical reference. One poem that can be used as an example is: “Christmas Turkey”. This poem gives a really positive outlook on life as it is about the holidays.

I learned that people should live their lives to the fullest, and to just be themselves. These ideas of getting the most out of life and being true to one’s nature may be applied to the characters in the book A Yellow Raft in Blue Water. The author, Michael Dorris, portrays the lives of three women, and as each woman’s life unfolds, the reader experiences paradigm shifts. One’s perceptions change after learning more about each character’s background. The three characters about whom my perception changes is Rayona, Christine, and Aunt Ida.…

There is one memorable phrase about the book related to poverty, and that part is the most impressed me. Junior and his family when his beloved dog Oscar, “the only living thing he could depend on”(pg. 9), is sick and, as the family cannot afford any treatment, Junior’s father shoots the dog to put him out of his misery. The poverty faced by his family is a never ending cycle. Junior knows that his family is unable to break the pattern for him and that he needs to break the cycle on his own.…

The author is trying to portray and mindset of how you people deal with depression, learn to love yourself, and if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything. Many of us go thru this during high school the fear of not being popular and having much insecurity to the point of us barely going to school and/or talking to others in school. It’s an image of how teens deal with problems throughout high school and outside lives and how it can take them to doing things of stupidity to feel loved.…
