Health throughout the UK is monitored by quality of life, infant mortality rates and life expectancy (Baker L, 2008, BTEC National Health and Social Care Book 2, page 2) The monitoring of health throughout the country allows for advanced planning of local services within the community that may be at risk of certain health problems. The monitoring of health at a local level allows for information to be recorded before being compared to the health of other communities across the country. Local information on health is an important aspect as it is collected on a geographical basis throughout the UK, for example vaccination rates, hospital admissions etc. This is one way on health can be monitored, as in the cases of other communities they may have higher incidence rates of certain diseases whereas others may have low incidences of diseases. Communities that have a higher rate of disease are monitored further and health promotion campaigns will be developed before being put into effect in order to reduce the risk of disease spreading within the community. Identifying health needs of the population – The health needs of the population are determined by the incidence of disease and trends identified. Nationally collated can identify health trends in the entire country. Statistics can be used to determine how health can be improved or how areas of concern can be highlighted and effects of ill health reduced or prevented. A responsibility of health professionals is to report incidences of specific diseases and illnesses so the information can be centrally collated and acted on. Factors such as age, genetics, environment, lifestyle, education and take up of preventive measures for example immunisation may relate to patterns of illness and disease. One of the most widespread of the reform movements was the temperance movement, which called for reducing the use of ,or abstaining from, any alcoholic beverages. This particular movement came about specifically because the Second Great Awakening religious reformers called for individuals to lead “clean” lives and the movement gained movement across the country. Unfortunately the movement was somewhat unsuccessful. American reformers also sought to implement school reform. Before the early 1800s, education for most Americans was very basic. For most, this meant a few months of schooling a year in a one-room rural schoolhouse. The wealthy engaged private tutors and academies. For the urban poor, a very few were able to attend private charitable…

    Primary Health Care

The potential impact of primary health care in assessing and managing smoking, hazardous drinking, poor diet and physical inactivity has been demonstrated among patients who are at higher risk. Effective interventions based around the 5As approach include the assessment of risk and readiness to change, brief motivational interventions and referral of suitable patients for more intensive interventions. Health checks have been demonstrated to improve the frequency of preventive care and support for behaviour change. However their impact on health outcomes is uncertain. Expansion of the current complexity of different Medicare items is undesirable. Health checks should focus on specific evidence based preventive actions and involve the use standardized resources such as Lifescripts and integrated health risk assessment tools. Other performance based incentives may be useful in targeting the needs of specific groups and encouraging primary health care to provide more outreach and culturally appropriate preventive care for disadvantaged groups. General practice referral of patients needing more intensive lifestyle interventions is infrequent due to a number of factors including cost and availability of providers and services and the integration between these services and primary health care. A major role of primary health care organisations is to coordinate and broker a network of referral services to support behaviour change based on standards and quality assurance. Other key roles of primary care include the support of practices to monitor and improve their performance in providing preventive care. Structural reform of primary health care may provide…
