Famous documents such as the Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address, or the Bill of Rights may have dim futures ahead of them. Some of these documents may not need to be taught or explored with depth in English 11 classrooms, but rather Social Studies classes. However, the Preamble to the Constitution is not a document that needs to be removed from the English 11 curriculum because of the antique yet alluring language within the text. According to Samantha Sutphin’s class syllabus, an English teacher at Mountain Range High School, the course description of English 11 American Literature is to “focus on the development of literary theme and structure across the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries in the United States in order for students to understand the thematic progression of American literature” meaning students must be able to learn and understand 18th century documents to understand the evolution of American writing through several centuries after. It is always important to understand history, and there is no better way than understanding a time period through literary analysis of documents from that time period, especially legally impactful documents.…

In the world of politics, one of the most important things is who you know. Knowing people will bring a politician success. Chris Matthew stressed one-on-one communication and “retail politics” in this first chapter of his book. He knows firsthand because he was in Washington for many years observing and learning. Not only is it necessary to know as many people as possible, but it is also important to make the person feel that their concerns are cared for on a personal level. Knowing people is not only important in the political world, but it is also important in the real world. The more people you know, the more opportunities will arise for you. In the book Chris Matthew talks about how many popular politicians rose to the top because they made the effort to get to know everyone, especially those who are important. This can apply to any work environment. Networking is a very important part of life. It is important for all of us to remember to treat each person with care because they will potentially be important in our lives.…

The Enlightenment, a period of reason, intellectual thought, and science, led some writers to question those values over emotion. Instead, as the Romantic movement gradually developed in response, writers began to look at a different approach to thought. The Romantic period, roughly between the years of 1785 to 1830, was a period when poets turned to nature, their individual emotions, and imagination to create their poetry. Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, and Keats rejected conventional literary forms, regular meters, and complex characters and experimented with emotion and nature subjects in their poems which marked a literary renaissance. Besides a response to the Enlightenment, the industrial revolution also influenced the Romantic sentiments. Poets quickly reacted towards the widespread change from a predominantly agricultural society to a modern industrial one. For example, England’s landscape started to emerge of smoky factories and crowded cities. The effects of the industrial revolution fueled the return of basic human emotion found in Romantic poetry. Among the Romantics who were one of the most influential and accomplished was William Wordsworth.…
