Anywhere from 4 to 6 percent of people have a major case of SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and another 10 to 20 percent experience a mild version of the disorder. Seasonal depression (as SAD is often called) is a serious disorder that affects those in northern climates during the winter months. The symptoms of the disorder include lack of energy, overeating (especially of sugary and high carb foods), loss of motivation, and general depression symptoms. As you can see, the disorder can be very debilitating for people. Thankfully, there is a way to deal with SAD; it is called sun lamp therapy (also known as light therapy).

The ideal lux value of a light being used for sun lamp therapy is 10,000. If you cannot find a light with that high of a lux value, then buy one with a lower intensity and increase the amount of time you spend near the light.
Fluorescent lamps
While you can use fluorescent lamps for sun lamp therapy, it is generally recommended that you do not. If you do have to use a fluorescent light source for some reason, have a diffusing screen on the lamp that will protect you from the UV rays emitted by the lamp.
White light vs colored light
Do not get a colored light lamp; find a lamp that gives off white light. It is not known why, but generally speaking white light seems to work better for sun lamp therapy than colored lights.
How long until the treatment works?
It varies from person to person. Many people will notice improvements within 3 to 5 days. In some cases it can take as long as 2 to 4 weeks. In extreme cases it can take as long as 4 to 6 weeks. If, after a month or two, no improvement is noticed, then the treatment is not likely working for the person. Sun lamp therapy is effective for many people, but for some it just does not work at
