At 4.9 billion dollars the tanning industry cannot afford to lose customers with claims of cancer risks not proven to be 100 % true. Vitamin D issues are also mixed in the controversy. “Scientists have proven, however, that exposure to all forms of…
Akwasi, I had never thought about tanning bed usage being a type of addiction of behavior repetitiveness. That's an interesting point, as something becomes a habit we tend to just continue to do it without consciously considering any consequences of it. I didn't know about any possible issues with the DHA used in the sunless tanners either. That's another consideration we should take into account before deciding to use them even though they are considered at the levels used with them to be non-toxic and safe. I have used a sunless tanner occasionally in the past, but this will make me more alert to be continuously checking for updates of the safety of their usage. It is really eye-opening to see what a health risk tanning beds can be, alarming…
There is two positive points for natural suntan. The first one is you receive vitamin D from the sun. Sunlight is the best and only natural source of vitamin D. Sunlight supplies the correct amount of vitamin D without any problem. Vitamin D from other sources causes health problems, because usually it is not the correct amount of vitamin D that the body requires. The second pro is natural suntan is less cancerous. It is proven that people who live in regions with more sunlight have been found to have a lower incidence of death from ovarian, breast, and colon cancer than those who live in places with less sunlight and use the tanning bed more often.…
Sundiata: An Old Epic of Mali is a verbal tale of the conquest and history of one of Mali’s great rulers- Sundiata, whose mother’s life I argue served as a premonition of how Sundiata’s destiny would play out. Early in the story we learn of the Maghan Kon Fatta and how his greatness as a natural ruler spread superseded his own realm of dominion into the neighboring cities. Sundiata in his own life has always had the blessing of seeing both sides of any situation. In the Sundiata’s parents, he was given the opportunity to help his mother fulfill her life’s mission to raise a king, however only after we learned how earlier on in the story, Sundiata brought shame to his mother, embarrassment so deep that she felt she would never be able to overcome.…
Summer Shade is a unique little place populated with unique folks. Lois and I moved here in 1976 from Louisville. The company I worked for at that time needed a salesperson in the area. We tried to find a house in Glasgow, but either the rent was too high or the places we could afford was mostly unlivable.…
Five percent of the business at San Diego's Hollywood Tans was from teenagers. The number of teenagers going to tanning salons is on the rise. The annual revenue brought in by teenagers using the salons has reached five billion dollars (California 1). Although it helps the tanning salon industry, it is a huge health threat to the teenagers. They can get sunburned which the inflammation of the skin is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. It is also believed that sunburns can essentially be the cause of skin cancer, particularly the deadly form known as melanoma. There is already a risk of getting the cancer from the sunlight let alone from the tanning beds. Tanning in beds should be banned for teenagers.…

The younger a person starts tanning, the worse their skin can get. A younger girl or boy starts can also have a higher risk of skin cancer, skin harm, or age a lot earlier. Wether you are artificial tanning, or sun tanning, it is still not good for you. Sun tanning provides vitamin D though, so it is healthier than a tanning bed. Because of the different rays, tanning beds are more dangerous than tanning out in the sun during the summer, or at the beach.…
Almost 25 percent of adolescents in America have reported going to an indoor tanning salon. Prevention and awareness are the two best ways to stop the increasing rise of skin cancer. It is necessary to be safe when exposing yourself to the sun. Proper eye protection should always be worn, such as sunglasses that cover 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. But most importantly, a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should always be worn when there is any chance to exposure from the sun. Along with regularly performed examinations of moles and spots on the skin, skin cancer can be nearly 100 percent treatable at an early…
Hochman tells the story of a pediatrician named Jessica Lilley, who had developed malignant melanoma after years of using tanning beds. She did not realize the impact of using tanning beds until later on in her life when she was diagnosed with skin cancer. It is noted that "five to 10 minutes (depending on the equipment) in a tanning bed is roughly equivalent to a half-hour in the sun on a mid-July afternoon"(Hochman). This is a great comparison because it shows how much stronger tanning beds can be. Tanning beds are a huge risk, especially to those who are of a young age. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "Nearly 70 percent of tanning salon patrons are Caucasian girls and women primarily between the ages of 16 and 29, and of the 28 million people who tan indoors every year, 2.3 million are teenagers." Similar to Jessica Lilley's experience, I also have a history of skin cancer. It is extremely important for me to prevent sunburn at all costs. Personally, getting sunburn on my back mutated the cells in a few of my moles, resulting in me needing to get them removed. I regularly visit the dermatologist to keep track of my moles. If a mole changes in shape, color, or size, it is highly recommended that the mole is biopsied and tested for cancer. It is very easy to develop skin cancer if the skin is not protected under harsh UV rays; thus, it is super important for people to regularly check their skin and protect it from the sun. Overall, many underage teenagers are unaware of the harsh effects of tanning beds, which is why it is so important that teens are educated early on in their…
Obviously, some of your skin is going to be exposed to the sun at some point. After all, you might want to go to the beach! If you do, the key to reducing your risk of skin cancer is to ease into it. If you are bone white, don't go hit the beach for an 8 hour session. You are going to get roasted, even with sunscreen on.…
On May 2, a state Senate committee approved legislation that would make California the first state in the nation to ban teenagers from hitting the indoor tanning bed. The bill follows a statement in February by the American Academy of Pediatrics calling for a ban on ultraviolet (UV) tanning beds and similar devices for anyone under the age of 18, according to state Sen. Ted Lieu, who says “because skin damage is cumulative, the more exposure to tanning beds you have early in life, the worse it is later in life.”…
Sunlight deprivation, brought on by cloudy weather, leads to seasonal affective disorder as well as low energy levels. Sunlight deficiency leads to SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which is a type of depression (Grohol, 2014). This disorder is regarded as having a seasonal pattern, as the weather is never stable and always changing (Grohol, 2014). Sunlight deprivation leads to a lack of Vitamin D (Mead, 2008). Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin from sunlight and converted to Vitamin D3 (Mead, 2008). Production of Vitamin D3 then leads to serotonin (a chemical in the body that influences and maintains mood) production and in turn melatonin (a chemical in the body that influences the body’s sleep schedule) production (Mead, 2008). SAD is…
The Sun as you know it is what keeps the Earth from freezing, and what keeps us alive. Without that giant ball of gas nothing would be able to survive and eventually we’d all die. Plants would die without sunlight, then animals, thus the extinction of humanity. It’s best you learn about the thing that keeps us alive, The Sun.…
