Sunday dinner
A Southern Sunday Dinner Every culture has special dishes that they prepare on special days or occasions. The African American culture has a dinner that they called Sunday dinner. Sunday dinner is more than just an ordinary dinner to the African American culture. Every dish is prepared from scratch and is prepared by the loving hands of grandma. Not one dish is a quick dish to prepare, it takes time and love has to be put in every dish. The main course of the Sunday dinner has to the include collard greens, without collard greens it’s not a Sunday dinner. I can remember walking into my grandmother house on a Saturday night and she will be in the kitchen over the sink cleaning greens. She would take each leaf and carefully examine it to make sure it was a good leaf and then she would break the thick part of the leaf and put it to soak in salt water. She would do this for about forty five minutes or so depending on how much collards she had to clean. While the collards are soaking in salt water, she then puts the smoke turkey necks or butts on to boil. After, an half hour has passed she would take the greens and rinse then in cold water several times and add them to the pot with the meat and cover the pot. After thirty minutes of cooking the whole house will began to smell the aroma of grandmas’ collard greens. She began to finish preparing her meats for Sunday dinner. Sunday dinners always have to have two or more dishes of different meats. The fresh ham, ribs, back chicken, fried chicken and beef roast are the ones grandma would always cook. She began cleaning and seasoning the different meats. She would put the ribs on to boil, place the ham in the oven along with the beef roast. In a matter of hours you would think you were in a restaurant with all of the different food smells that was in the air. If you ever eaten Sunday dinner at my grandma house you would know it was the smell of Sunday dinner.
