Introduction The retail community is one that uses language extensively. It uses language to entice customers, to aid employees, and to keep their company thriving. Before I went in to interview, I knew some things about the retail community as I am apart of it, and still I thought that language in retail was primarily used to persuade, but after some analysis I realized I was completely wrong the language of retail has a much more complex role. The retail community does have a common goal, to sell their merchandise and be profitable, and that is what is at the heart of retail language. I asked her a series of questions, all outlining the circumstances that make a discourse community. I felt that an interview was an optimal method because even though I am part of the Sunglass Hut community, the person I interviewed had garnered much more experience than I had, and so I wanted to get her take on some questions that were pulled directly from Swales description of what a discourse community is.
Analysis of Interview
My interview was conducted inside of a Laundromat, so it was very casual, or so I thought it would be. So when I sat down I delved right into it, I asked her if working retail has affected her language. She said it had because she had to modify her language in order to better relate to a customer, or work professionally in general. I then asked her if the main point of her language was coercion, and to my surprise she said no. She told me that the main point of her language was to be informative. I then asked her what she thought the primary goal of language in retail is, and she said to me that she believed the primary goal was to tell the customer a story with your words to help sell the product. I also asked her what kinds of communication are there that the retail community possesses, she expressed that there are many ways that they do this, in one specific instance she explained that they have something called the Weekly Focus where upper management writes down what goals you have to hit each day, on the store level and on the personal
