Christianity and Islam are two of the most practiced religions in the world, and have been for centuries. These two faiths are both monotheistic, which means they worship one God, or Allah. Started over 2000 years ago, Christianity is based on the teachings and life of Jesus Christ and was spread throughout the Roman Empire. The religion of Islam began early in 600 C.E. by the prophet Muhammad, and he spread the word of Allah. These religions spread quickly in Europe and the Middle East. As they progressed, new trading routes came about in these areas. Overtime, Christianity and Islam developed opinions about the trading and businesses activity and the people who pursued it. According to the religion’s holy books, the Bible and Qur’an,…

The Sunni-Shiite split actually started right after Muhammad's death in 632. His death led to the dispute over his successor. Since he was the founder of Islam, he was the undisputed leader. However, Mohammad died without a son (who would have automatically inherited his father's authority) and without a clear will.…
Sunni, Shiite, and Sufi are three branches of Islam. The Shiite and Sunni’s were the first really major division of the Islamic religion. This division was the result of a political argument over who should precede Muhammed. Sunni’s name means tradition and they believed the legitimacy of the Orthodox caliphates, and based everything off those beliefs. Sunni’s believe that Muhammad did not designate a successor. Now Shiite’s get their name from the word Shia, which means faction. They believe that Muhammad did leave a successor and it was the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad named, Ali. They do not believe the same thing as Sunnis and disagree and do not get along with them. Now Sufi’s are” a contemplative school of Islam that aims to develop an individual 's consciousness of God though chanting, recitation of litanies, music and physical movement (SCRUGGS, 2010, para. )” Sufis find the importance by approaching the inner meaning of god through mysticism. They want to find the hidden meanings of the world they do not read or follow the Qur’an as strictly and as a result have closer relationships to other religions (SCRUGGS,…

Due to the color prejudice of their white European masters, African Americans suffered greatly from the blatant oppression they experienced for nearly 400 years in slavery. White Americans thought that “Negroes are too backward in evolution to associate with” (Curtis, 52). This attitude pushed a lot of African Americans in the early twenty century to reject all forms of suppression in every possible way. Thus they came up with their own system of beliefs. Their withdrawal from Christianity could be defined as crucial for it was the first step to free them from white supremacy. It was also a step toward a real black theology of liberation. This yearning for a wisdom that can speak for and about their suffering urged a significant number of them to join some black movements which provided a better alternative to Christianity, the religion of their white masters.…

1. According to the class text the five pillars of Islam are part of the Muslim law called Shari'ah. The five pillars are the fundamentals of the law that consist of "pronouncing the confession of faith, performing salaat prayers, fasting during the month of Ramadan, Zakat (charity) and Hajj (spiritual pilgrimage to Mecca)". One of the five pillars, pronouncing the confession of faith, states that there is only one true God and that only God deserves to be worshipped. This ideology of one true God can be found similarly in the religion of Judaism. The Jewish people are monotheistic, meaning that they too believe there is only one true divine God. Another pillar of Islam out of the five is the performance of the salaat prayers. The salaat prayers…
