When Janet is observing Michael for these skills as well she should try and see if Michael might need additional training or education in this area so that he is not further jeopardizing the client and their relationships because he is uncomfortable and might not be autonomous or even self aware yet. It appears that maybe Michael is not able to make sense of what is occurring during the session or identify themes with the client and can not discriminate from what is essential to the sessions and is seeking the answers from Janet. The client is seeking guidance for her and her partner and not looking to him as her positive role model. The positive aspect to active supervision is that it is problem focused and tries to find alternative results or outcomes for the supervisee and while focusing on the client and possible outcomes or results. The positive side for reactive supervision is that this is more of a hands off based supervision and requires the supervisor to ask limited questions that tend to be generic and not supplying the answers to the supervisee.
