Supilinn is a historic area which is located next to the city centre of Tartu, directly behind the former city wall. Most of Supilinn district has been part of Tartu city at least since the 17th century. In the mid-18th century landowners of Supilinn district were mostly city government members, wealthy citizens, clerics or nobles .
About fifteen years ago (after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the restoration of Estonian independence in 1994) along with radical changes in society the image of Supilinn as run-down slum changed as well. The region was first occupied by artistic people and bohemians who squatted the abandoned houses, had a sense of freedom about them and thus made the district attractive to the people who were not naturally bohemian. It is a gentrifying area neighbouring the city centre whereas characteristic to the gentrification the real estate prices rise, residents change and the popularity of the region increases. The results of the studies carried out in Supilinn confirm that the new people who came have thereby changed the region, and the change is that these people live different lives and do it behind closed doors. Comparing the current and the former time, the real changes that have taken place in the physical space which has been fixed up – the roads have been repaired and the majority of the houses have been fixed up. On a social level, it was noted that the residents have exchanged and the percentage of lease spaces has reduced. People have perceived hand in hand with the visible changes – smooth roads, new people – the changes in the character of the district, in its mentality. Supilinn is no longer so free, so open. People are searching for more
