Supplemental Communication Research Paper
The specific topic to be studied is the influence of communication health improvement strategies on health behaviors of food stamp recipients. Effective communication plays a critical role in the health systems of the of our nation. Various forms of communication allow us to deliver important messages to those in need, specifically when it comes to improving health behaviors related to increased health concerns. Challenges associated with health communication and its effectiveness on specific populations are influenced by greatly affected by social influences such as living environments, beliefs and actions in regards to their well-being (Bernhardt (2004)). Health concerns vary per population and their social influences, therefore in this study we will identify common factors linking communication improvement strategies and the manner in which they assist in the change of health behavior habits within nutrition supplemental programs. Specifically we will concentrate on participants of the supplemental Nutrition Program known as SNAP. The SNAP program is a Supplemental Nutrition Program provided by the state of Georgia. The program provides low income families and individuals with supplemental benefits to assist with nutritional needs. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program was founded in 1933 during times of the great depression and the service was part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. SNAP’s initial purpose was to assist farmers with basic farm commodities in return those farmers sold their goods at discounted prices in order to aid those in need of hunger relief. Today the SNAP program still utilizes the services of farmers, local grocery stores, and community organizations.     The food stamp project was established in the 1930’s in response to the great depression. It was later terminated "since the conditions that brought the program into being--unmarketable food surpluses and widespread unemployment--no longer existed" (Short History, 2014).
