Janet is a thirty-year-old mother of three young children. She is currently struggling with multiple stressors (divorce, social support, financial problems). At this point in time Janet’s suffering results from a combination of these life stressors and her maladaptive thought processes.…
Subsequently following being exposed to her mother’s shooting, Amarika experienced many life changes, secondary adversities, and reminders of the trauma that she experienced. In addition, Amarika faced many risk factors in association with the aftermath of the traumatic event. Also, she experienced many protective factors that helped her slowly return to a regulated state. In discussing the facts of the case and their relation to the risk factors and protective factors, the parallels to the secondary adversities, changes in family life, and reminders of the trauma will become more evident.…
Americans’ growing dependency on Food Stamps, written the week of 3/02/12, asks the question “are we feeding the hungry, breeding dependency, or both?” Food Stamps are form of aid to help people with low income provided by the government. Food stamps were changed in 2004 in favor of plastic debit cards that are refilled electronically each month. In 2008 the government renamed the program Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. This program has become a political turning point because GOP Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said in January that “more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any other president in American history. In 2008, before Obama took office, about 28 million people received food stamps;…
One of my best friends fits the Trauma DSM-V category. In high school she always wore nice clothes, had her hair done, wore make-up, all the typical things most girl’s in high school do. The year directly following high school things changed abruptly. She began dying her hair strange colors, not wearing any make-up at all, and not really caring about her clothes. To be honest she was kind of a “free bird” anyways so I did not think anything of it at the time. This went on for about a year and when we would hangout she did not act any different. It turns out she was undergoing a very traumatic and chronic stress situation at home she was not telling anyone about. Unfortunately, instead of talking about it to myself or our other friends she decided…
Child hunger is a major problem in the United States. The number of children living in poverty increased 1.5 million between the year 2000 and 2005 (Food Bank for New York City, 2006). As poverty shifts food insecurity increases. This same time frame saw approximately a one million increase in children living in food insecure households. There are programs to address hunger. The three largest Federal food and nutrition assistance programs are: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and The National School Lunch Program.…
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has help put food on the tables of American families. Food stamps are a Department of Agriculture (USDA) program for low income families covering most foods, although not hot prepared meals or alcohol. This paper is intended to show how and why this program works. Democrats (Liberals) and Republicans (Conservatives) have substantial opposing viewpoints on this issue that will be analyzed and discussed. Both party’s ideas and concerns should be considered as long as the American families, especially the children’s welfare, are not disregarded.…

As a social service assistant and life skill counselor I plan to provide direct and indirect client services. While a client works towards self sufficiency, they may need assistance including food stamps, Medicaid, welfare and other human service programs. My clients are responsible for bringing my payroll records, tax returns, social security cards for themselves and family members, rent receipts, utility bills and additional records that may apply. I use this information to determine their eligibility for programs that are available to them and their family members. For single parents, I submit their income and expenses to see if they qualify for child care assistance so that they can work and return to school. I am also able to determine eligibility for reduced rent and food stamps. Many times single parents may need additional training or education to obtain better employment. Returning to school requires a lot of time and commitment and many single parents are playing dual roles so I work hard to get them temporary assistance so that their basic needs of food, rent and child care is met so that they can commit the necessary time to improve their quality of life and eventually…
The events and actions during the Holocaust led to drastic psychological consequences. Children for several generations have shown symptoms from emotional trauma that their parents, or even grandparents, experienced during the Holocaust. This trauma originated from several sources, such as starvation, physical and emotional abuse, and witnessing brutality towards others. Children were a major target during the Holocaust, and this resulted in devastating trauma from many sources, such as starvation, witnessing death, and ruthless dehumanization.…
In The Fixer, the comic is set in 2001, where Sacco’s avatar as the war reporter returned to postwar Sarajevo and an economically devastated Bosnia. The postwar scenes indicate the tentative relationship between Neven and Sacco’s avatar, by utilizing the graphic and narration to allow the audience to analyze the ideology and subjectivity of the characters. According to Terri Tomsky, he defines the trauma economy as where the trauma interacts “with other capitalist power structures” (49). Similarly, Sacco reminds the reader that the story reflects the realistic side of the journalism industry, the story is based on the economic value exchange of trauma that is surrounded by political issue; thereby, “enable or disable” the awareness of particular…

In an attempt to deal with the high level of personal injury litigation in the Irish courts and tackle the high cost of insurance the government introduced The Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act in 2003. 2 The act came into effect in June 2004 and established the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB). PIAB is primarily governed under the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003 (amended 2007) the Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 and more recently The Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011. Its duty is to asses all claims for personal injury as an independent statutory body and “without the need for legal proceedings”1. Its purpose is to streamline what was previously a lengthy and costly process and reduce the length of time taken to receive compensation. If we look at the statics in the annual report we see that in 2011 the total yearly charge for the Labour Courts costs had been €10.68m this compared to ligation fees based on comparable work at as estimated €56.45m. 6…
