INTRODUCTION TO RETAILING IN INDIA
Retail trade has emerged as one of the largest industry contributing to employment generation, revenue generation, increased turnover and many more. Organised retailing is showing signs of enormous creativity. It has emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast paced industries with several players entering the market. As a matter of fact retailing in India has gradually edge its way towards becoming the next boom industry. The emergence of retail in India is cause for success of India organised Retail & Marketing. We can see more than 12 million retail outlets in India, and India has highest density of retail outlets in the world. Retail Industry in India is at present estimated to be more than US $ 250 billion.
BIG BAZAAR is the largest hypermarket chain in India. It is designed as an agglomeration of bazaars or Indian markets, with cluster offering a wide range of merchandise, including fashion apparels, food products, general merchandise, furniture, electronics, books, fast food and entertainment and leisure products. Big Bazaar presented a six day ‘MAHABACHAT’ shopping mela from August 10th to 15th August 2013. There were great discounts. In addition to that there were discounts on food products, fabrics, furniture and home appliances.

AIM OF THE STUDY
The motive of the study is to understand the company’s supply chain management and store layout during the BIG BAZAAR 6 DAYS MAHABACHAT SHOPPING MELA at its branch in NOIDA at GIP Mall. The main problem for the store managers was to shelf the products in a way that all of them are visible and customer finds the offer worth enough to make a purchase. Other problems were to manage store with more number of customers, more inventory and same space. Moreover keeping a check on waiting time for customers at billing counter was another difficult task.

    Retailing is emerging as a sunrise industry in India and is presently the largest employer after agriculture. In the year 2004, the size of Indian organized retail industry was Rs 28,000 Crores, which was only 3% of the total retailing market. Retailing in its present form started in the latter half of 20th Century in USA and Europe and today constitutes 20% of US GDP. It is the 3rd largest employer segment in USA. Organized retailing in India is projected to grow at the rate of 25%-30% p.a. and is estimated to reach an astounding Rs 1,00,000 Crores by 2010. The contribution of organized retail is expected to rise from 3% to 9% by the end of the decade. The projection for the current year ie 2005 is Rs 35,000 Crores. In India, it has been found out that the top 6 cities contribute for 66% of total organized retailing. With the metros already been exploited, the focus has now been shifted towards the tier-II cities**. The 'retail boom', 85% of which has so far been concentrated in the metros is beginning to percolate down to these smaller cities and towns. The contribution of these tier-II cities to total organized retailing sales is expected to grow to 20-25%. In the year 2004, Rs 28,000 Crores organized retail industry had Clothing, Textiles & fashion accessories as the highest contributor (39%), where as health & beauty had a contribution of 2%. Food & Grocery contributed to 18% whereas Pharma Retail had a contribution of 2%.
