The Senate confirmation process was at battle in the video “The Politics of Judicial Appointments.” It opens with Obama searching for quality candidates to fill the role of Supreme Court Justice. As it is the president’s duty to select a candidate, there are certain qualities that the president searches for. The qualities that the president may search for include: ideological and policy preferences, judicial competence, political loyalty, and demographic factors. The president may choose nominees based on the views that the individual possess. This gives assurance to the president that both the White House and the Supreme court are heading in the same direction. Most presidents also have in interest in appointing candidates that are judicially competent. This allows for speeding along the confirmation process (Yolaf,246).
Another important quality that a supreme court justice may possess is loyalty, which is the political background that a candidate has (Yolaf, 246). Appointing a justice that is Democratic may indeed lead to future Democratic rulings. Thus, a candidate that is able to support many of the president’s decisions is a major asset.
