Surgery
"Surgery". This is the seven letter word that fascinates me and grasps my attention with no effort. As I sat in the hospital room with my sick young cousin, this was the only word I heard come out of the neurologist's mouth. My interest in becoming a surgeon began at the young age of seven years old. I was, and still am, amazed at how profound such an act can be. As a seven year old, I was always the clean and well organized girl who was always inside cutting open her stuffed animals and sewing them back together. Growing up with a Middle-Eastern background, I was always lectured about being a proper wife. My family never cared about my education, instead they felt they needed to prepare me to act my role as a domestic housewife. This is the reason I have chosen to pursue a life that strays away from the path of domesticity. My academic goals are simple, I want to be the top of my graduating class at UCR. I dream of attending a prestigious medical school that will prove to the culture I come from that women are just as capable as men. Attending a prestigious medical school will allow me to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a life-saving surgeon. If I do get accepted to a well renown medical school, it will make my family proud and will serve as living proof that education is in fact the best way to achieve lifelong success. Both of my parents lost the opportunity of a true education and with this loss, they lack hope. I have the drive to save lives and to help those in need. Growing up I watched numerous family members suffer in hospitals. Rather than focusing on their suffering, I always focused on the operations they underwent. I watched them get healed or whither away. Of all the experiences I've learned from, my cousins brain surgery was the most fascinating to me. She had a brain tumor pressing on her olfactory bulb. As soon as I heard she was going to have surgery I went home and with anxious excitement I searched for videos that documented such surgeries.

Everything in my life began to change, from my friends to my attitude. My future was looking bright. The only thing left was to pick a profession, something that would ignite my spark. That was when my parents were involved in a terrible accident. In March 2009, my parents were pedestrians struck by a car. My mother was diagnosed with a fractured tibial plateau, and was wheelchair bound for five months. During this difficult time I accompanied her to numerous appointments and met many different medical personnel. Surprisingly, I became inspired. It was an awful time for my family, but it was an experience that changed my life. Everything about the healthcare system fascinated me. I asked many questions about medications, imaging techniques that were used on my mother, and job descriptions of practically everyone I had encountered. I remember telling a nurse about how I found the hospital to be the most interesting place that I have ever visited and she replied, “Well if you feel that way, you should become a doctor, they practically live…

Former President Theodore Roosevelt said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Finding that “work worth doing” has been quite the challenge for me, but I believe I have found it now. Medicine was not the first passion I sought. It was actually to become a pilot because my father used to be one. But possibly pursuing a career in the healthcare industry did come about when I was 9, after I saw pictures of my dad’s arthroscopic knee surgery and the x-ray which completely amazed me. Seeing my dad’s recovery process from such a major operation, along with multiple family members and friends become physicians themselves gave me much insight to the profession. I was able to see a knee operation similar to my dad’s while shadowing Dr. Robert Foster at Texas Orthopedics, where I was also allowed to stand right next to Dr. Foster and assist in handing him the surgical tools and listen to him telling me exactly what he is doing throughout the procedure. And then, following a morning of operating was the afternoon clinic hours at which I got to see the patient-doctor interaction happen, where I got to see assurance of recovery in the patients and trust in the doctor develop and grow. The experience only kept encouraging me to strive for a rewarding career.…

During that time, I saw people of varying economic and cultural backgrounds all experiencing the same struggle and agony as my parents did, doing everything in their power to keep their sick loved ones alive. Watching them, I realised that the life of a loved one is invaluable, and I only had to look at my father who lost his mother at the age of two to understand the devastating effect of losing a person dear to you. As a child, I was always interested in science and I wanted to do a job with which I could help people. After this experience; watching the role that doctors play in helping people save the most invaluable thing in their lives, it became my ambition to become a doctor. It became my ambition to provide someone else with the opportunity that I was given, a second chance at life; to help people in vulnerable times, like my doctors helped my parents; and to help people in saving the thing that they hold dear to them; the life of a loved one. Therefore, I would like to undertake the medical programme to turn my dream into a…
