Susan Cain Ted Talk

In the TED talk, “The Power of Introverts” speaker Susan Cain suggests that introversion should be encouraged and embraced. She believes that by allowing individuals to work individually, it can help maximize their skills in school and work. She explains that introverts aren’t shy, but they respond differently to stimulation. As an introvert, I empathize Cain’s personal experience of being an introvert, but some of her reasoning is questionable. However, the idea that introversion should be accepted as a method of working and learning is appealing. I would recommend anyone to watch her TED talk because anyone can learn from her discussion on introversion, even if you’re an extrovert. She immediately starts her speech with a personal anecdote. Cain describes how she went to summer camp for the first time and had this idea of what it would be like, but she found out it was “like a keg party without any alcohol.” She said that she really didn’t feel like herself when she was there. I understand where Cain is coming from because I was in her shoes. I went to summer camp and just wanted to read or go out and take photos rather than feeling like I was partying all the time. Cain claims that “it’s our loss for sure, but it is also our colleagues’ loss.” Cain is relating to the audience by stating that not only does the lack of introversion affect introverts, but also extroverts.
