Suspense In Richard The King
Shakespeare uses many of the same devices that are used today to maintain suspense in his play, The Tragedy of Richard The Third. The number one factor is that people love conspiracies revolving around their government and history. He specifically used facts and legends surrounded Richard, Duke of Gloucester and how he came to the throne. In particular, how many people died or were imprisoned right up to him becoming king. For instance, Richard’s nephews, who were the true heir to the throne, were suddenly considered illegitimate and disappeared. In the play Richard had them killed, but in reality nobody knows what really happened to the boys. As well as, his brother George, Duke of Clarence untimely death and many other accounts surrounding
his coronation. Pairing facts with legends is a good way to keep an audience entertained even when they already know the story, which is something that will continue to be done.
