SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE ROLE OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE INDUSTRIALIZATION OF NIGERIA

E. M. Okonkwo, O. J. Okunola and C. S. Ezeanyanaso National Research Institute for Chemical Technology, Basawa, Zaria, Nigeria

ABSTRACT Like any nation in the world, the challenges facing the sustainability of technological advancement of chemical industry in Nigeria today are re-inventing the use of materials. To address this challenge, chemistry is actually central to many of the environmental and resource use issues at the heart of sustainable development. Also, collaboration from an interdisciplinary group of stakeholders will be necessary. An emerging approach to this challenge seeks to embed the diverse set of environmental perspectives and interests in the everyday practice of the people most responsible for using and creating new materials—chemists. The approach, which has come to be known as Green Chemistry, intends to eliminate the intrinsic hazard itself, rather than focusing on reducing risk by minimizing exposure. This addresses the stake of chemists, stakeholders, and policymakers in everyday practices that are re-inventing chemistry and its material inputs, products, and wastes in a developing economy, otherwise known as Nigeria. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The Brundland Commission (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) defined sustainable development as the process in which the exploitation of natural resources, the allocation of investments, and the process of technological development and organizational change are in harmony with each other for both current and future generations.

Based on this context, “sustainability” is a path forward that allows humanity to meet current environmental and human health, economic, and societal needs

The purpose of this experiment to carry out in the lab is because to determined the capability to water droplet to carry out the liquid-liquid extraction. The studies is to determine the average time travel for each of the 10 out of 50 water droplets from top of the burette and to the bottom, the average volume of each of the water droplet and the volume of NaOH needed to neutralise the benzoic acid in aqueous solution. From the volume collected for 50 droplets surface area and radius is calculated for a droplet. The uses of the surfaces area and volume help to determined the concentration of benzoic acid in kerosene, mole of benzoic acid transferred, molar flux and mass transfer coefficient.…

There exist many definitions of sustainability which come from different sectors of society (economic, environmental, and social ). One of the best known general definitions emerged from a 1987 United Nation Report (Brundtland Commision): "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".…

Cleaning up the environment and, more importantly, preventing pollution are important issues in today’s world. The theme for the 2002 National Chemistry Week is “Chemistry Keeps Us Clean.” While the chemical industry is traditionally viewed more as a cause than a solution to pollution, chemistry does offer unique solutions in the area of waste prevention. One of the most fundamental of these solutions is the application of the green chemistry principle of atom economy to chemical reactions. Atom economy moves the practice of minimizing waste to the molecular level. Traditionally, chemists have focused on maximizing yield, minimizing the number of steps or synthesizing a completely unique chemical. Green chemistry and atom economy introduce a new goal into reaction chemistry: designing reactions so that the atoms present in the starting materials end up in the product rather than in the wastestream. This concept provides a framework for evaluating different chemistries, and an ideal to strive for in new reaction chemistry (1,2,3).…

The objective of this project is to optimize the preparation of modified Calcium Oxide (CaO) to capture CO2 by carbonation through hydration of ethanol/water. The carbonation reaction is the basis for CO2 capture systems. However CaO as regenerable CO2 sorbents in industrial processes is limited by the rapid decay of the carbonation conversion with the number of cycle carbonation/ calcination. Therefore Calcium based sorbents have attracted renewed attention as possible sorbents for cyclic calcination/carbonation processes due to their potential for regeneration and effective technique for capturing CO2 from combustion processes. The carbonation conversion for CaO modified with ethanol/water solution is greater than for CaO hydrated with distilled water and is much higher than that for calcined limestone. (Li et all). This work covers and presents a multi experimental test of preparing the modified CaO through hydration of water/ethanol by manipulate various parameter combination. The experiments were conducted using a modified furnace to permit the flow of CO2 for carbonation process and calcium oxide. Then, the carbonation conversion is calculated which signify the effectiveness of CO2 capture and the optimum parameter to produce the highest carbonation conversion is identified based on approach of Taguchi Method , the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Through this study the optimal parameter to prepare modified CaO through ethanol/water hydration can be obtained.…

Environmental management can be described as the process by which the collection of policies, structures, resources, systems and processes are brought to mutual interplay for the achievement of clearly defined environmental policy directives (EPA). Ghana, a developing country, is facing so many environmental challenges despite the policies put in place by the various institutions to help curb this problem. Some of these challenges are lack of proper waste management, deforestation, pollution, land or soil degradation, desertification and resource depletion among others. This essay seeks to elaborate briefly on some of the main environmental challenges confronting Ghana and also throw more light on the concept of sustainable development.…
