“Last year, three of my family members were gruesomely murdered in a hate crime” is the sentence she uses to begin her speech. We can see here that, she grabs the attention of her audience by starting off her speech with an anecdote. As for me, the usage of anecdote at the beginning of her speech is helpful as it assisted to centre the audience’s attention solely on her than other things. Not just that, the anecdote has also helped Suzanne to engage with her audience emotionally (pathos) as the sentences included emotive words.
“I’m hopeful that by the end of this talk you will make a choice, and join me in standing up against hate” is the evidence on how she introduces the topic and informs her audience the purpose of her speech which is to persuade subtly. By doing so, she has actually provided a clear grasp of her speech overall.
Throughout the speech, Suzanne also has shared her family’s personal story in experiencing Islamophobia. Therefore, sequences of the story make her speech to be delivered chronologically.
