At the beginning of the story they two girls didn’t exactly get along. Suzy is an American citizen that is helping the refugees. But she gets stuck with this a mean girl named Leah. So Suzy’s writes mean about her things like “she is creepy” or “she’s as prickly as a porcupine. Which shortly after, Leah got her epithet, Miss Porcupine. But it’s not like Leah thinks much different. She too wrote things like that Suzy treated them like animals or she is mean for laughing at them when they tried to eat the orange fruit like an apple.
When Leah becomes
ill, much changes. Since Leah was in the hospital, Suzy decided to read Leah’s diary. When she opened the pages she found it all quite confusing. She wondered why the Nazis killed people or what the yellow star was. So she discreetly asked her mother without raising suspicion. After her mother explained to her, she finally understood why she acted so mean. She was trying to keep all her pain inside so when Suzy went to visit her, she offered her to have the green dress with the white trim that didn’t fit her yet she wanted to keep and a notebook so she could write. She also allowed Leah to read her diary. But the most important thing she offered was friendship.
When they understood each other they were friends instead of enemies. And at last, they learned that they may not be the same but they shouldn't make assumptions about each other until they know.
