Farm fresh was cheaper in all categories except the lettuce, food lion offered it at 1.19 (only with an MVP card, original priced at 1.39). Farm fresh prices are as follows: one gallon whole milk was 3.25, white bread 1.09, dozen eggs 1.32, one pound of hamburger 4.08 compared to food lions: milk 3.75, bread 1.99, eggs 1.58, and hamburger 4.78. The next evaluation system was the grading on a scale of one to five, five being the highest. The categories that I felt that are the most important to customers are Cleanliness, Customer Service, Layout and Displays, and Diversity of Selection. The first category was Cleanliness; food lion received a 3 where farm fresh got a five. My experience started from the parking lot and then the store. I found numerous trash on the inside and fast food wrappings outside; also there were a lot of carts throughout Food Lions the parking lot. Farm Fresh was very clean and no carts where outside. The next category was Customer Service; Food Lion received a 3 where Farm Fresh received a 5. Immediately as I walked in to Farm Fresh I was greeted and…

Michael Pollan opens his New York Times article “Unhappy Meals“with a rather ambiguous statement, “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly Plants”. Pollan gives the “average Joe” a new perspective on what food really is in this article. But in reality it’s not a new spin rather a throwback on a time trusted take on food, but I’m getting ahead of myself now. He does this starting off, by giving his rule of thumb, “if you’re concerned about your health, you should probably avoid food products that make health claims.” A rather odd claim I thought at first. It seems to go against everything that we have ever learned about nutrition. I have regularly found myself going out of my way to find foods that make such claims. So why would I avoid these foods? He points out that produce doesn’t usually come with a label shouting “healthy!” Still I found this statement a little off, so I read on and continued to ruminate on his words.…

    Analysis of Food Inc.

Studies have shown that many people all over the world are unaware of where their food comes from. When an individual goes to consume a food product, he or she could be completely oblivious to the methods of manufacture, processing, packaging or transportation gone into the production of the food item. It is often said that ‘ignorance is bliss’ – perhaps this rings true in the case of food, its origins and its consumption as well. In such a scenario, eating well could seem like an unlikely prospect. The definition of ‘eating well’ in modern times seems to have gone from eating healthily, to eating ethically. The manner in which food is produced and consumed has changed more rapidly in the past fifty years than it has in the previous ten thousand years (Pollan and Schlosser, 2008). With this swift transformation, various ethical issues came to the fore. Food production is now done large scale in factories, rather than in farms. Mass production of various types of food, from crops and vegetables to seafood and meat, is very much the norm. The fact that food is mass produced nowadays is already something that a lot of people do not know about. The reason behind this is that food producing firms do not want the consumers – their customers – to know too much about the food manufacturing industry (Pollan and Schlosser, 2008), in the fear that customer loyalty could be lost upon their finding out various truths. To retain their customer base, according to documentary film ‘Food, Inc.’, narrated by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser, the image associated with food in the United States of America is that of an American farmer. Various motifs plastered all over food packaging and advertisements for food products, such as green pastures for grazing cattle, picket fences, the typical farmhouse, vast meadows and, most importantly, the farmer, lead consumers to believe that their food still comes from farms, or at least a pastoral version of small time cottage industries. With…

Humans need few things for survival: water, shelter, and food. So why is it that our food, something we need to survive, has grown so detached from us? Research has shown what we should eat and how much, with the illustration of the food pyramid to make it easy. More meats and grains and less fats and oils to stay healthy. Eat right, exercise, watch portion sizes, and all will be well with your body. What Americans do not think about is where their food comes from. Why are there oranges in summer and strawberries in winter? Why can a shopper buy ripe tomatoes year round? Americans have lost touch with their foods, where it comes from, the production process, and what is in it. Large food corporations care more for quick money than for safe, healthy foods. By shopping locally, consumers can fully understand where their food comes from, the treatment it faces, and whether or not it is safe.…

“Some people feel like since they are getting a good deal on their food that they don’t care about where it comes from because it is cheap and always available.” (Food Inc.) Money is a big issue for many people, and even the people with a lot of money don’t mind getting a good deal at the grocery store. The other side of this would be that some people feel that they want to spend their money on something that is not only cheap, but safe and healthy. People deserve to know where the food they consume is coming from. Until companies are willing to talk to the people and explain what is going on and how they do their job, it is going to be an argument.…
