UNDERSTANDING OF SWINE FLU
In the first section of the article author Henry I miller discuss about the extent and impact of swine flu which is epidemic.
It is originated in Mexico and spreads rapidly too many countries and parts of us.
The epidemiology of such disease outbreak is like a jigsaw puzzle.
Within short period of time many number of cases reported in many countries.
These events demonstrate that good surveillance is needed in order to detect early stages of infectious disease agents.
Unfortunately, in countries like Mexico, Asian and African countries due to close proximity of poultry and swine to humans, unsanitary conditions, poverty and inadequate public health infrastructure of all kinds make it unlikely to prevent the pandemic.
Flu viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to humans and vice versa via droplets from sneezing or coughing and it can also be transmitted from human to human either directly or via contaminated surfaces.
Pigs are most susceptible to infection of flu viruses of mammalian and avian group. There is a concern for couple of reasons, Firstly pig’s serves as intermediates in transmission of flu viruses from birds to humans. Secondly pigs serves as hosts in which two influenza viruses infecting an animal simultaneously can undergo genetic reassortment it is a process in which viral RNA are shuffled and exchanged creating a new organism.
Studies shows that flu can be prevented in its early stages by performing ring prophylaxis which is by aggressively using anti flu drugs, vaccines, quarantines we can isolate small out breaks of infectious agents.
There are few anti flu drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza which are effective in early stages of the infection but danger of using these drugs in poor countries without proper public health facilities when they are administrated improperly and in sub
