Switching Places Short Story
Switching Places

One September morning, I didn’t wake up from my alarm clock. Instead of my mom waking me up she decides to go ahead to school without me. I had a test in every subject that day! Then when I tried calling her she ignored my call because it rang once then went to voicemail. I tried several times after that to call her and she finally answered and I asked her why she left me at home. She told me because you didn’t wake up and get ready. I asked her why she didn’t wake me up, she said because you’re in seventh grade and should be able to do it yourself. Then she told this big story on how when she was in grade school and she had to wake up by herself in the fifth grade and blah blah blah.

When I returned the next day I had F’s in all classes and I lost my phone for the whole semester. The night I got home from the worst day of school I asked my mom if I could go to the football game. She told me I couldn’t go because my grades were low. I told her it wasn’t my fault but she told me that I needed to stay home and study. I thought about it and it made me more aggravated every time I thought about it.

I told my mom that she couldn’t last one single day in my shoes. She got pretty mad at me for that. She told

She told me that school was easy for her because she has been there and done that. She said she was also a teacher so she knew a little more than average people. Mom also said she missed her job and missed cooking. She now gave me my phone back and said, “I know now that it was my fault that you failed in all your classes but a miracle happened and magically you have all A’s now.” I checked my grades and I did have all A’s! I told my mom she is the coolest mom in the world! She retook the tests in every class and aced them all and my grades shot up. Even my gym class grade. I have no clue how she did that but she did. She must run pretty

The other day, my mom asked me to go to the store with her, I agreed of course because I did not want her going off on me like she does usually. So we got in the car, then she said she left the keys in the house, I went in the house to get the keys and to my surprise I heard the car start, I figured she had found the keys and walked back outside to get in the car and it was gone. The only trace left was the smoke in the air as she peeled rubber down the road. That is just an example of her most recent act.…

The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have. I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the…

Mrs. Snyder passed tests out and flipped mine over when she placed it on my desk. I flip over and read the paper. It says “PARENT CONFERENCE MONDAY NIGHT AT 7:00 PM.” I looked at the grade and my heart dropped, it was a F. I hear the bell ring and I was so mad at myself I just put my test away and stomped out of the room. That night, I heard my parent’s car pull in after school. “I have to show them, I have to.” As they walk through the door, I hand my test to them and explained what happened. I felt my heart drop and felt total regret for what I did. “I’m taking your electronics away!” my mom yelled, “Go to your room. Think about your imprudent decisions!” The whole house was quiet that night. It was Monday morning, school is back already. In 1st period, Mrs. Snyder announces that there will be a new unit test next monday and there will be a study guide passed around today. Mrs Snyder comes next to my desk. “Here is a chance to redeem yourself. Don’t forget about the meeting tonight.” That night, my parents drove to the meeting. That was the worst 45 minutes of my life. They came out furious and had faces of disappointment. To my luck, there was no lecture…

She always wanted me to stay with her at her house and I went everywhere with her. When I was nine she took me to a circus. I had the privilege of riding an elephant while I was there. At first I was terrified, but once I finally boarded the elephant I lost all fear and realized that it was not necessary to be scared at all. After the ride was finished, we entered the arena and enjoyed the rest of the show. However, one day my mom woulkd not let me stay with her anymore. I was not even allowed to speak to her until I was older. My mom later told me the reason why she would not let me see her. My Aunt Lorena had a son who was the same age of me. He passed away when he was four years old because of a rare kidney disease. We were extremely close to one another that we were like brothers. Since we were so close and we were the same age my Aunt Lorena tried to steal me from my…

I closed my eyes and as I opened them I was looking straight at my mother. That instant our eyes were locked I never wanted the lock to break. Another tear slipped down, and I could taste the salty warmth on my tongue. The crash took five seconds but it felt like ten years. This time I heard the words “I’m wrong mom. I’m sorry mom.” In an instant the noise grew so loud it seemed like I was standing in the middle of a nuclear bomb. Not a second later it was silent and the world around me went pitch…

My mom and I were running late. Not like it was anything new. We were supposed to be in Moulton no later than 5:30, and now it was closer to 6:00. We finally pulled into the apartment complex, where we were supposed to meet this guy, at a little after 6:00. After searching for this guy for a few minutes[->0] and a few phone calls, we assumed that we had missed him. "See Mom, you should have gotten off of work early," I said just as I saw the guy pull into the parking lot. "Hey are you ready to move into your apartment?" asked the guy. After a few minutes of struggling to get the furniture into the apartment, I figured it was the end of the adventure. A few weeks[->1] later, after getting home from work, my mom was telling me that I would never guess who had called her earlier in the day. Not being in a great mood, I just shrugged my shoulders as to suggest that I didn't really care. Then she asked me if I remembered the guy who we had met just a few days before. She told me that he had called to ask her if she wanted to go out one night that coming weekend.…

When I realize where the sound was coming from, I run to my parent's bed to only find out that they're not home. I remember them telling me that they were staying at my uncle’s house and wouldn’t return till the next day. I run downstairs and call the fire department and then my parents to tell them the news. The fire department arrives first, and my parents are right behind them. They inspect the house to see what caused the fire alarm to start, but they come out laughing. They tell me that it wasn't the fire alarm that was ringing, but my alarm clock that sounds like a fire alarm. Well, it can. I go to my class and find out that I have a pop quiz. I'm so tired that I fall asleep right on the quiz and wake up when my teacher starts collecting them. At lunch, I find out I forgot my lunch at home and sit through all my afternoon classes with an empty stomach. I’m ecstatic when the day finally ends, but my happiness is short lived. After begging to my teacher about giving me a re-test, which the answer to the question was no, I miss my bus home, meaning I have to take the public transit home. Once my teachers did not notice a change in my behaviour, they planned a conference with my mom. In the days before the parent-teacher conference, I was terribly nervous. I considered telling my parents the truth many times, especially when my mom asked me the reason for the meeting, but I did not have the guts to tell her, so I lied some more and hoped for the best. On the afternoon of the conference, I saw my mother walk into the counselor's office with the homework I revised, as I sat outside the door trying in vain to hear the conversation inside. While sitting there in quiet reflection, staring around the ornate office, I recognized the major mistakes I made. I realized it was... [continues]…
