Business description
Started in 1977 and Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple (AAPL) Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets mobile communication and media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players, and sells a variety of related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications.1 The company’s products and services include iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod, Apple TV, a portfolio of consumer and professional software applications, the iOS and OS X operation systems, iCloud, and a variety of accessory, service and support offerings. The company also sells and delivers digital content and applications through the iTunes Store, AppStore, iBook Store, and Mac App Store. The company sells their products worldwide through their retail stores, online stores, and direct sales force, as well as through third party cellular network carriers, wholesalers, and retailers. In addition, the company sells a variety of third party iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac compatible products, including application software and various accessories through its online and retail stores. The company sells to consumers, small and midsize businesses, educational establishments, and government entities. As of 2015, Apple employs 92,600 people worldwide.7
Strengths
Advertising: One of Apple’s biggest strengths is its marketing and advertising capabilities, which increase brand awareness and create a greater demand for company products. Apple’s annual advertising budget reached $1.2 billion in 2014, more than doubling their $501 million budget of 2009.6 Despite their increased budget, it is not large when being compared to that of its competitors. In 2013, Apple spent only 0.64% of total sales on advertising compared to Samsung’s 1.75% of total sales spent.5 The same situation is reflected in the company’s brand valuation growth.
