SWOT Analysis for Wal-Mart and Carrefour
What is a hypermarket? According to Business Dictionary that is an online business definition resource, it is a “vast self-service warehouse-cum-retail outlet that combines the features of a supermarket, department store, discount store, and specialty store in one location.” A hypermarket may also be called a hyper-mart (Business Dictionary, 2012). The multinational retailers that are analyzed in this report are considered hypermarkets.
This critical analysis will communicate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in a SWOT analysis of Wal-Mart and Carrefour specifically in the country of China that operate in the hyper-market retail industry.
Strengths - China Wal-Mart | Carrefour | 1. World’s largest retailer per sales volume 2. Global Leader 3. Variety merchandise provider 4. Sustained through difficult economic times | 1. #2 Global grocer and general merchandise. 2. Operates in 31 countries as Wal-Mart operates in 25 (as of 2002) 3. Has 10,673 stores, compared to Wal-mart who has 5,080 as of 2002 4. Has 62 stores in China and Wal-mart has 25 |

Weaknesses - China Wal-Mart | Carrefour | 1. Lacking in regulatory compliance expertise and execution per region 2. Scandals rising from lack of proper management and ethical community within the store employees 3. Distrust stemming from business issues both in the community who buys product and with employees who work there | 1. Sales in decline, and profit margins too small. 2. Not informed of local planning and growth laws of the regions causing missed opportunities for growth. |
