Sydney Barnes: The Most Threating Analysis Of Sydney Bradman
Let me preface this by saying, Sydney Barnes, like Donald Bradman among batsmen, is the god standard by which all bowlers are judged statistically. He has no equal with which we can compare. Therefore, he is not included in this analysis of mere mortals, out of respect.
With that said, my all-time seven favourite pace bowlers (in alphabetical order) are Ambrose, Hadlee, Imran Khan, Lillee, Marshall, McGrath and Wasim. By the eye test, these are the greatest pace bowlers and most objective cricket followers will agree. However, what do the numbers say?
SEVENTEEN GREATS
I looked at pace bowlers who played more than 40 Tests matches, took 200 or more wickets, had an average less than 26 and a strike rate less than 58. It was my view that pace

The parameters included: bowling average (Ave), strike rate (SR), economy rate (Econ), best bowling in an innings (BBI), best bowling in a match (BBM), four or more wickets per innings, ten or more wickets per match, wickets per inning (WpI) and wickets per match (WpM).
I looked at four different ways of analyzing the nine different statistical parameters and came up with an overall ranking. One constant from the analysis was that no matter how many different ways I analyzed the data, the 17 bowlers were divided into three groups: Top (1-6), Middle (7-11) and a Bottom

I was surprised to see Donald & Garner in this elite group. Many wouldn’t consider Donald in the top-6 fast bowlers of all time – sacrilege some would say. Similarly, Garner is often rated below his contemporaries, for example, the more stylish and elegant Michael ‘Whispering Death’ Holding. However, this goes to show you how underrated Donald and Garner were as bowlers.
Steyn is the only current player on this list, and to make the top-6 is a testament to the type of career he has to date. This despite Steyn playing in the batsman dominated era. Batting averages in Steyn’s era are the highest since the 1920s-1940s. Ridiculous!
Middle 5 (alphabetical order): Ambrose, Imran Khan, Lille, McGrath, and Waqar. I was stunned to see Ambrose and McGrath in this group. However, both Ambrose and McGrath had mid-table rankings in terms of WpI, WpM and SR, which contributed to their drop to the middle group.
One thing about all these bowlers in this group is that they were attacking juggernauts. They never backed down from any batsman and always drove the fear of God into

Sir Donald Bradman, born in 1908, is the most renowned and respected of Australian cricketers who, although of retiring demeanour, attained heroic stature in the interwar period and captained Australia in test matches against England from 1936 to 1948. He represents an era, long gone, when sportsmen were gentlemen and the love of a game, not dubious 'star' status and huge financial rewards, was the inducement to play. In this way, too, he represents an Australia that has now receded into the romantic past, when the kind of man he was and the principles he espoused embodied a unified nation's beliefs about itself an understated confidence, even in hard times, a sense of fair play and a simplicity (sophisticates, today, would say 'a simplemindedness) about life and its purposes. The affection of that society for Bradman was enunciated in the opening phrase of the popular song that was written about him: 'Our Don Bradman'. Foulcher recalls the cricketer's reputation, in this poem, and subjects it to his keen poet's scrutiny. 'Bradman's last innings' is framed by the event commemorated in the title - Bradman's last appearance at the crease, and the irony of his unceremonious dismissal, on that occasion, without a single run to his credit: Bowled for a duck, you could have asked for better.... At the end of the poem, the experience of his last match is more bitterly registered four runs short of that century / average, at the last, betrayed by your own game - as the cruel summation of a brilliant career. Between, Foulcher sketches the great batsman's life in the context of its significance in Australian history and the momentous national and world events of the earlier part of this century. In making these connections, the poet indicates the national and international renown of Bradman in these tumultuous years.…

Yet even today, as Ruth's incredible home run total is about to be broken once again, we are reminded of the days when real heroes used to run the base paths, heroes who played hard, lived hard and gave us everything they had on and off the field. The names of the players who eventually broke that record have come and gone, so much of their achievement still open to debate. Babe Ruth remains the gold standard. "No man has ever lived who hit a baseball as hard as Ruth," Damon Runyon wrote. For all we know, that still holds…

The team is highly dependent on foreign players for providing the right balance, be it Dirk Nannes to get initial breakthroughs or Warner and Dilshan to get them off to a good start. Sehwag, we have seen, prefers to bat a little lower down the order, sending in the other dashers at the top. Having all left-arm pacers makes their attack one dimensional too and Mishra, the lone experienced spinner, might have to bear the carry the entire spin attack on his shoulders.…

“Survival of the Fittest” said famous scientist Charles Darwin, and yes now this theory is applicable for the Gen Y workforce. Adaptability to change is one of the very important factor that we all as generation Y employees and it is one of the mantra for todays rapidly changing global business environment. Sachin played all the three formats by adapting to the various demands of the modern game. I will quickly compare some legends with the master for better understanding. The players I have chosen are legends on their own and they are Rahul Dravid “The Wall” and Saurav Ganguly “The Prince of Kolkata”(no offense guys just a comparison). Both Rahul and Saurav were not able to adapt to the demands of the modern game their ODI strike rates were 71.24 and 73.70 which is much lower to that of the Sachin’s 86.23 and of most of the modern day players who were striking at an average of 90.…
