Course Description and Goals Welcome to WRT 102: Introductory Writing Workshop A. This class emphasizes writing for academic purposes. You will learn strategies for extended writing assignments at the university. Short papers and at least two major essays in a variety of academic genres are required. You will do extensive revision on multiple drafts in a variety of genres, including a researched argument and will be required to submit a final portfolio that must be judged acceptable by your professor and an outsider reader. A through C/U grading only.
Course Objectives This course is designed to strengthen your skills in the following areas:

Using writing, reading, and discussion to discover what you think, know, and feel
Writing Process Skills

Generating ideas for writing and getting past writer’s block, developing the ability to critique your writing at appropriate stages in order to improve expression, refining skills in
performing research using academic journals, books, online databases, and the STARS system, and proofreading to produce polished essays
Rhetorical Skills
:
Employing persuasive strategies and evidence to back up a viewpoint convincingly
Genre Skills:
Learning the different conventions for the summary, an annotated bibliography, a textual analysis, and a researched argument
Grammar and Usage Skills:
Learning conventions of standard written American English and developing ability to find and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar
