The fictional novel ‘Dougy’ by James Moloney deals with a range of issues that are faced in the Aboriginal community. These themes correspond with the main theme of crossing boundaries. Boundaries such as physical, mental and racial are shown throughout the book with many heroic qualities shown by the characters. This book also demonstrates the good and the bad qualities of the indigenous and the non-indigenous people. As well as the impact that the aboriginal people’s culture and behaviour has to the way others approach them.…

The story, Phoebe the spy, is all about a 13 year old girl. Her name is Phoebe Fraunces. Her father, Samuel Fraunces, asks Phoebe to be a spy. Samuel had heard rumors that someone had a plot to kill General George Washington. All that Samuel knew was about the plot and that the killer's name began with the letter T. So, Phoebe travels to General's home. She posed as a maid. 2 very important people in the story, Pompey and the cook, greet Phoebe at the door. After about two months serving as a maid, Phoebe hears big news from her father while she is at the lake or ocean. She meets her father everyday at the market, to inform him of any weird behaviors at General George Washington's home. Her father told Phoebe that there were three or less days until this killer would attack General George Washington. When Phoebe returns to the house, she talks to Mr. Hickey, a supposed "friend" of the family when he brings in some peas. Those peas were sort of out of season. Then Hickey asks for George's dinner plate that is filled with peas. So, Phoebe gives him the plate, only so he could sprinkle something that looked like salt on them. Then Phoebe hears somebody call Mr. Hickey by the name Thomas. And that is when it all started to click to Phoebe. The name that began with T, the salt, which was actually was poison, it all came together! That's actually a true thing that happened in real life, too. George already had his plate with the peas, or so Phoebe thought. But, right when George was about to eat, Phoebe started to throw the peas containing poison out the window to the chickens. One after another, they slowly slumped to the ground until they were dead. Then everybody believed her that there was poison on the peas. So, Phoebe had saved General Washington's life. And that is how the story, Phoebe the Spy, goes.…

    Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus was originally born Diane Nemerov on March 14, 1923 to David Nemerov and Gertrude Russek Nemerov. She was the daughter of a wealthy New York businessman. Her family owned Russeks department store on Fifth Avenue, allowing Dian a pampered childhood. As a member of a prominent New York family, she grew up with a strong sense of what was "prohibited" and what was "acceptable" in high society. Diane’s world was a protected one, with little adversity; yet this very lack of adversity made her feel as thou she was living in ungrounded world. As funny and different as it may seem, the ability to have a comfortable life was somehow painful for her. An extremely shy child, she was often fearful but told no one of her scary daydreams and nightmares. From what I gather her closest relationship was with her older brother, Howard.…

The author also uses characterization to bring out the theme. Even though this short story is only 6 pages long Callaghan really lets us get a feel for the characters. This is done two ways. One is through other characters so that there isn't a bias. The author lets us see other character opinions about the main character Smitty. For example the owner of the hotel describes Smitty as being "A mild, harmless looking guy" and also said he was very "polite." We see what Michael thinks of Smitty as well. Michael describes him as being a "little fellow." Then we see Smitty being described by the narrator over and over again as a "little man." A "shy little man" or a "mild little man" who is filled with enthusiasm at…

Horatio is always been a character whose worth and importance has been disregard in the play Hamlet. Shakespeare deliberately introduces him as a minor character but his importance increases in stature through the plays progression. Shakespeare establishes Horatio as the pinnacle character, by whose standards and morality, everybody else is judged by. He embodies sanity and reason amidst our world of corruption and instability. He was basically a stranger to hamlet at the start of the play where the only thing they share in common is their education at Wittenberg yet his relationship with hamlet endures and strengthens compared to hamlet’s other relationships with Claudius, Gertrude, Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Yet as these relationship perished Horatio was there, his presence maintained hamlets brewing insanity and helped ground him. In addition unlike all the other characters, Shakespeare enabled him to remains the sole survivor who lived to tell the tale of this renowned tragedy and who reasoned with Fortinbras in support of peace amidst turmoil. As a result Shakespeare has bestowed him as the survivor of Denmark, a remarkable achievement that has never been appreciated. Therefore despite being considered a minor character, Horatio plays a very significant role in the play Hamlet where in reality he is the main hero of the play.…

For Tennyson, the most evident mode of comparison between both figures is that they are both leaders. It becomes evident in the poem that Tennyson sees both figures as leaders of Ithaca. Ulysses is the traditional leader of the island, while Telemachus has been elevated to a point where he is now leader, as well. Yet, it is here where there is some pivot. In his words, Ulysses sees Telemachus as more equipped to handle the administrative and more practical elements of leadership on the island. The idea that Ulysses speaks of his son as "He works his house/ I mine," indicates that the father sees his son as capable of being able to handle Ithaca, an island that has suddenly dwarfed in importance for Ulysses. At the same time, while there is love for the son from the father, there is a distinct statement that the dreams of grandeur and transcendence that the father holds are elements that the son does not possess the capacity to hold:…
