Sylvia Plath Father Of Mine Analysis

Every kid needs a person to be there for them and teach them important things of life like talking to girls, playing sports, riding a bike and so much more. Growing up without a father is a very hard thing to go through and can change a person’s entire life. In the poem “Daddy” by Sylvia Plath and the song “Father Of Mine” written by Art Alexakis the narrators both grew up without a father. In both pieces of work their father left them at a very young age. Plath seems to have a bit of hatred towards her father. Sylvia explains that she does not want to see him in many lines: “Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I'm through.” and “You bit my pretty red heart in two”. In the song by Art, listeners can construe that the singer would love to see his father
again: “Father of mine. Take me back to the day. Yeah, when I was still your golden boy. Back before you went away”. The loss of their father has caused mental problems for each writer. In both pieces of literature you can tell that the loss of their father has changed them. Plath claims to feel better off without her father being there: “I have always been scared of you.”. Alexakis feels confused and upset his father was not there with him throughout his lifetime: “I will never be safe. I will never be sane”. Both writers now have a different outlook on life due to their father’s absence. Due to easy listening of the song “Father Of Mine” that piece of work is more interesting and enjoyable. Plath’s poem seems a bit violent and could be hard for most people to relate to. Overall having a father figure in your life makes you a better person with less worries and complications.
