A Separate Peace is one of John Knowles' most acclaimed works and is based on Knowles' stay at Phillip Exeter Academy in the early-to-mid 1940's. It is set in a New England boarding school for boys known as Devon, and begins in 1958 but quickly flashes back to the years 1942 and 1943. In these years at the peak of World War II we follow through the eyes and mind of first-person narrator and protagonist Gene Forrester, as he copes internally with jealousy and hate, and externally with the oncoming draft. As is the fate of many great novels it quickly hit the big screen, and in 1972 a film version of A Separate Peace made its first debut, directed by Larry Peerce, and starring Parker Stevensen as 'Gene' and John Heyl as 'Finny'. Though the movie…

In the novel A Separate Peace there are many symbols, however one of the most powerful is the burning of The Iliad. The burning of The Iliad, a famous tale of war, represents Finny's rejection of the war. Gene says, during the carnival Finny"drew me increasingly ...into a world inhabited by just himself and me, where there was no war at all." Finny is actively rejecting the war, he is removing it from every aspect of his life; he is trying to bring back the carefree summer session through the carnival, training for the Olympics instead of war, and purging every mention of the war from his life. He is desperately trying to create an environment of peace, Finny always found peace in sports; by burning the Iliad he is creating an absence of war,…

The period of the Civil War and Reconstruction, lasting from 1860-1877, the nation underwent a multitude of powerful changes, physically and emotionally. A school of thought today exists that, “The North won the war, bur the South won reconstruction.” What does this mean exactly? When the Union defeated the Confederacy, Northerners, freemen, and existing slaves imagined a political and social revolution in which their dreams of abolition and government power would manifest itself. However, the civil rights movement within the constitution, specifically the additions of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, brought to life the desires of the Union, but in the South such hostility and racism still existed that there was…

Conflict is inevitable, and constantly present in life. Whether it’s obvious and right in front of your face or hidden beneath a pile of lies someone will always suffer because of it. Although that being said, without it- would we truly understand the importance of peace? There are some out there who believe that some of the greatest triumphs and acts of the human spirit were during times of great conflict such as wars and repression’s. My mother has told me since I was a child, “Conversation before confrontation. You must use your words to solve differences before violence.” That saying has always stuck with me since the first time I heard it. In keeping it close to my heart, I have grown to live by those words. Before any source of conflict can arise, I take the pacifist route to try and solve differences instead of letting hate overcome a more peaceful direction.…

    The Peacemaker Analysis

“Peace would result in an unstoppable power that others would want to emulate or become a part of, resulting in an indissoluble union” (Rice, 2008, p. 411) Dr. Kings peace movement was a perfect example of this. The people that were tired of being treated unfairly followed him. However, the people that didn’t want peace went against Dr. King eventually killing him. I think of peace is black and white because you either want to live in a worry-free and happy world with peace or live in a world of sadness and death without peace. The Peacemaker explained that having peace meant, “They would be without fear, sadness and anger”. (Rice, 2008, p. 411) There could be no way to be in between peace.…
