Symbolism In 'Becoming Adolf' By Rich Cohen
“Becoming Adolf” is an essay written by Rich Cohen in which he has an epiphany. Sporting a mustache must be the source of evil when it comes to men in power. He visits the history of men in power and their staches'. Cohen also decides to “bring back” the toothbrush mustache that is commonly associated with Adolf Hitler.
This essay is also a great example of symbolism. Symbolism is when an object does not only represent itself but it represents something greater. Cohen uses symbolism very well in his essay. Everyone knows who Adolf Hitler is. Everyone also knows his “inch of hair that speaks of bottomless evil” (Cohen) or the Hitler stache'. Symbols are everywhere in pop-culture especially with celebrities. A few examples can be Pewee Hermans

Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. The symbols used in the short story, such as the landscape, white elephants, the train, and the beaded curtain, gives the readers an…

Conrad uses the accountant as a symbol of greed and conceitedness in Heart of Darkness similarly to how Foster describes the use of a symbol in his novel How to Read Literature Like a Professor. Symbols, according to Foster, have many meanings. Readers presume “them to mean something[,...] one something in particular[, but] it doesn’t work like that” (Foster); they have multiple meanings. In this way, Conrad uses his character, the accountant, as a symbol of both greed and egotism. When the accountant is first introduced, he is described as wearing “an unexpected elegance of getup [...] high starched collar, white cuffs, a light alpaca jacket, snowy trousers...” (Conrad). These clothes are a commonplace in Europe, but are in rare form in Africa.…

Themes in stories can be developed through many different means. It can be openly stated or just simply implied. Throughout history symbolism has been used to develop stories. Even in the bible there are multiple symbols that can be found. J.D. Salinger uses symbols to help readers understand the overall message and theme of his book The Catcher in the Rye. From Holden’s red hunting hat to Allie’s baseball mitt, symbols are constantly being thrown into the story. One other symbol that I think is highly significant is the ducks in Central Park.…

Even the dead and dying are your assailants as you fight through a massive wall of bodies for the chance to drawn in a breath. The living are as pitiful as the forgotten corpses they abandoned while marching through the snow, devoid of feeling and sentiment. Suddenly, the song of a lone violin, resonant in its isolation, floats through the dismal barrack. The musician is not a glorious soloist with thousands of adoring fans, but a boy on his deathbed. Elie Wiesel describes this moment in his memoir of the Holocaust, Night. The Jews had become empty shells forced to march through the glacial, incapitating cold after the concentration camp's evacuation. However, Juliek,…

Orwell uses many forms of symbolism in his novel 1984. Just a few of these symbols are the rats that Winston is afraid of, the diary where he keeps all his thoughts and feelings, and the gin that both Winston and other public figures turn to help control their emotions. Another notable symbol is the telescreen, which evokes feelings of dictatorship over the population, as they are constantly being watched for any signs of rebellion. Orwell’s symbols all point to the same general idea: the weakening of the ability to think for oneself.…
