The question above asks of a question that us, the reader, can only assume as to whether or not the author meant a significance to the title “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” The story overall revolves around the main character, Peyton Farquhar, who is sentenced to be hanged because he was deceived by a Yankee spy. When it is time for Peyton to jump, the noose breaks Peyton free and he swims to a road, dodging the bullets being fired at him. Peyton arrives at home greeted by his family, when snap the noose breaks his neck, leaving Peyton dead on Owl Creek Bridge. On the way down to his death, Peyton had one last glimpse of his life and family before he died. Since this question is more of a narrow-minded request, I believe that there is…

“There can be no great courage where there is no confidence or assurance”-Orison Swett Marden. This quote speaks true, that to have courage, we need confidence and assurance. In the book The Road, a symbol often referred to is the father of the son. He represents the idea of an older figurehead helping you along your way, and reassuring you. This symbol also helps a theme function and come up.…
The road that is mentioned in this passage, the “migrant way”, refers to Route 66 that was used by many to travel to California. The common road used by migrants from all over the country symbolizes the common struggle of those people as they make their journey west. As the migrants came together on Route 66, they shared similar goals and similar challenges. Steinbeck uses this road as a symbol of a shared struggle between these people.…

The setting of the story “Woman Hollering Creek” reveals that women in Texas and Mexico are looked down upon and often mistreated. In the story, women in Mexico are seen as inferior once in the United States due to the lack of English spoken. The setting of the story reveals that the towns “are built so that you have to depend on husbands. Or you have to stay home.” (Cisneros 54). This reveals that women are expected to do the basic “womanly” chores. Such as clean, cook, and care for children. In 1970, Antonello is 22 years old and recently married. He has been working on the Westgate Bridge for almost 2 years and loves his job. Like many of his workmates, Antonello is proud of the bridge. He believes it is going to be more spectacular than the Sydney Harbour Bridge, that it is going to bring the city together and that they, the bridge builders, will be remembered for years to come. On the 15th October 1970 the Westgate Bridge collapses during construction and thirty-five men are killed.…
In EverybodyLove is a strong symbol of showing somebody that you care and want to everything that you can for them. Having love for somebody would mean you would try to do anything and everything you can just to see that person be happy. When you’re missing a person you will feel like you are empty inside and wishing you could just hug and see that person again. I know everybody is missing or has missed somebody before, especially the people who are gone for a certain amount of time. Like the men and women who fought in war and could not see the people they loved, they missed them terribly.…

Using the knowledge I received while reading the novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” I created a book cover with symbols that represent the plotline. In my book cover I chose a series of images that includes a white fence, a paint brush, a paint bucket, a large tree, map and marbles. With the symbol of the tree and the map, I used my knowledge of the finally of novel to give a slight insight into the ending of the novel. In the ending of novel, Tom and Huck find gold coins after, Tom is trapped inside of a cave and is able to locate the hidden treasure of Injun Joe. After Tom found the location of treasure he invited Huck to go and gather the coins with him. The tree is present to symbolize the scene where Tom…
The epigraph features three major symbols. These symbols refer to water, spirituality and family/community. The symbolism for water comes from the word “river”, spirituality from “angel” and family/community from “gather”. Out of the three symbols water definitely is the dominant one as most important events in the novel take place somewhere near a river, most specifically The Swan River. For example when Fish drowns and when Sam loses his fingers.…
Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" could possibly be just a nonsensical rhyme meant purely for entertainment value. The fact that this is a nonsense poem inside a nonsense story makes it all the more difficult to decipher a deeper meaning. Like the author, who had a darker side to him, so too might his work. Carroll made this statement in a letter to an American friend,I'm very much afraid I didn't mean anything but nonsense. Still, you know, words mean more than we mean to express when we use them; so a whole book ought to mean a great deal more than the writer means. So, whatever good meanings are in the book, I'm glad to accept as the meaning of the book. (Shaw)This passage almost defines the relationship between the author and what he or she pens. Even though it is a statement regarding "The Hunting of the Snark", he could have said it about any one of his works. Meaning is in the mind of the reader and this is the beauty nonsensical literature. Every reader can interpret a unique hidden behind the words on the page. Many interpretations believe that the poem could be biting remarks at religion and it's followers. The main argument towards that theory is that Jesus Christ was a carpenter by trade and so the carpenter in the poem could represent Christianity. The trouble with this is that Carroll had told the illustrator that he could choose from a carpenter, a butterfly or a baronet, which is a member of the lowest titled social order the English had at the time. Carroll gave the artist these three choices only because any of them would fit the poem's meter. The illustrator wanted to sketch a carpenter and other then this there is no real reason for the career choice of the character. Could "The Walrus and The Carpenter", then be a political satire written to shed light on the atrocities occurring in the political realm at the time? Are the characters are symbolic of Capitalistic politicians and the unquestioning lackeys that follow them? This…
High Plains Drifter was not the typical western that I thought it was going to be; however, I am a fan of Clint Eastwood and I really enjoyed this movie. I noticed a lot of symbolism that was used in this movie. The first example of symbolism I saw was Mordecai. I believe Mordecai and the way he presented himself really symbolized the good that was left in Lago- small, abused, and overshadowed. Another example of symbolism was the whip. I believed the whip to not only be a weapon but to be a symbol of power. Back in the day and maybe still do this day humans used whips on animals and it was used on slaves many years ago. I believed the whip to have demonstrated the power of the one with the whip and the one without the…
The bridge symbolizes the distance Munch felt to everyone around him, even the two figures in the background of the painting is seen a distance away from the main figure. The sky is painted mainly with orange and red. In the poem The Great Scream in Nature, Munch describes the sky as being blood-red, not as a colorful sun-set or as beautiful as most sunsets are described to be. The figure, who is assumed to represent Munch, is alone in the foreground. It is the main feature that attracts the attention of the viewers. With its wide eyes and opened mouth, it is obvious that the figure is screaming, but the question is…
