'Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants'
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In “Hills like White Elephants” an important symbol is the elephant. One way it is used is the term “white elephant”. A white elephant is a gift that is unwanted by the owner and the maintenance required is higher than the usefulness. Also there is another expression that involvles elephants, “the elephant in the room”. These interpetations of the word plays a part of being a symbol in the story.

One reason why the term “white elephant” is used as a symbol is for the baby the girl has. Throughout the story the american and the girl are in a conversation about the girl having an abortion. The infant is refered to as a white

    I believe the white elephants could symbolize there relationship. The story says "They (the hills) were white in the sun and the country was brown and dry." He is the American white man, and she is the Spanish girl. Just as the hills over power or stand above the rest of the country, the man is trying to get her to decide to have the operation. I also believe the white elephants could symbolize that she is seeing him for who he is. The meaning of white elephant is you get something less than what you thought.     Evaluation Argument "Hills Like White Elephants"

    A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable but burdensome possession, but also it means a rare and sacred creature. In Ernest Hemingway’s short story Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway uses an unborn child as a white elephant. This short story depicts a couple of an American man and young women at a train station somewhere in Spain. Hemingway tells the story from watching the couple from across the bar and listening to their troublesome conversation. Through overhearing the couple’s conversation Hemingway uses dialogue to explain the couple’s decision of an abortion operation. Hills Like White Elephants is a great example of Hemingway’s rare use of dialogue. Hemingway compresses dialogue in his stories by removing authorial guidance, forcing readers to interpret for themselves shades of meaning (Del Gizzo, Moddelmog 175). In the short story Hemingway also uses the setting to help the reader understand what the man and woman are feeling and thinking as they await their train. By providing details of the hills, bar, and landscape the reader can better understand the emotions and situation the couple are experiencing. The way that Hemingway creates the characters is a very interesting way because he lets the reader make their own opinions about the characters through their actions and words. In Hills Like White Elephants Hemingway uses compressed dialogue to let the reader interpret the story themselves while also using the setting and characters to help show the situation that the story portrays.…

    The most remarkable aspect of the short story "Hills Like White Elephants," written by Ernest Hemingway, is it 's rich use of symbolism. The story is rather unique in that it does not have a complete plot line with an introduction leading to an expanded story. Neither are we left with a developed conclusion to the story. The main thrust centers around two characters having a quarrel about certain issues they disagree on. However, Hemingway leaves his reader in the dark as to the background of the two characters, even to the point of omitting specifics regarding the argument itself. Even though Hemingway provides very little detail regarding the characters ' respective pasts or even the current situation, the use of symbolism utilized throughout the conversation allows us to understand something of them through indirect implications rather than specific details. Hemmingway 's clever use of symbolism and allusion allows the reader to understand (again, without making direct reference to specifics) that they are arguing over whether or not Jig (the main female character) should have an abortion. By analyzing the couple 's dialogue we can deduce that the couple is in fact playing mind games, and manipulating each other 's points of views on abortion regarding their unborn child.…
