Symbolism is a very important part of literature and it adds so much to depth of stories. It is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described. Authors use symbols to add depth to whatever message or symbol is behind the descriptions. Symbols can be showed by recurring objects, words, or actions, or by other repeated things. The plot and action that take place in a story is different because the symbolism in the writing work on another level to enhance the story. Dunbar goes on to talk about the pain and suffering that these masks try to cover up. By the end he talks about how the kindness and smiles that people show are just a disguise of the painful truth that hides behind those "masks". This poem includes a lot of symbolism.
