Innocent Death In “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson uses symbols to foreshadow death. Her major symbol she used, is the Man Mr. Graves. She uses him as a male character to foreshadow the death of the innocent women. She uses his name to show that men in society are higher than women and that they mean more. She shows that our society is all male based and that men mean more than women.

The life of a women in Afghanistan and many other countries in the Middle East, is very traditional. It is almost frowned upon to be a women, which is wrong. Many women when they are born, are raised as boys. Their parents do this for them to have a better life. “In Afghanistan’s patriarchal society, economic dependency on men and social stigma put parents in a difficult spot. Daughters are often considered as a burden, while a son will earn money, carry on the family legacy and stay home to care for their aging parents” (Strochlic, Nina. “Inside the Lives of Girls Dressed as Boys in Afghanistan.”). Afghanistan proves that there are still patriarchal societies today and how sad it is that women feel they can’t be
