One great example of symbolism in the story is the suspense created by the ebony clock. The masqueraders were going through their everyday lives. They danced, partied, and just overall had a great time. In paragraph 5 the narrator says, “a gigantic clock of ebony, its pendulum swings to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang.” This quote describes the clock and its features. The clock was very big and stood out in the western room, however the masqueraders still looked over it. Some things might seem obvious, but in reality they are much harder to recognize.
