For an older person, the value of the conversations, images, friends, relatives, and melodies that pass through their minds are very significant. It is significant because it embodies their life’s worth and what they have done with their life. The elder’s families and neighbors no longer as them for advice and so the old person may end up deciding that their efforts are useless. While one who accepts old age as a series of challenges is one who believes that every new infirmity is an enemy to be outwitted and they enjoy every little victories and even major successes. In which case, Cowley has more respect for the elder because he/she has reached a point in which many have given up, but that elder is persevering and not ready to give up just
